Adipose Stem Cells Enhance Nerve Regeneration and Muscle Function in a Peroneal Nerve Ablation Model

Abstract: Severe peripheral nerve injuries have devastating consequences on the quality of life in affected patients, and they represent a significant unmet medical need. Destruction of nerve fibers results in denervation of targeted muscles, which, subsequently, undergo progressive atrophy and loss of function. Timely restoration of neural innervation to muscle fibers is crucial to the preservation of muscle homeostasis and function. The goal of this study was to evaluate the impact of addition of adipose stem cells (A… Show more

“…A 6 mm peroneal nerve gap in rats has been bridged with a PLC conduit loaded with ASCs. The contractile function of the anterior crural muscles is similar to the reconstruction with ANT (Passipieri et al., 2019). Also, ASC‐seeded scaffolds of gelatin hydrogel tubes used for reconstructing an 8 mm sciatic nerve defect in mice lead to significant improvement in the locomotive performance over the controls as observed in walking‐track analyses at week 2, week 5, and week 8 after the surgery.…”

“…Functional and morphological recovery of target muscle is direct evidence of nerve regeneration and reinnervation (53). Peripheral nerve injuries frequently induce muscle atrophy through enhancing the induction of proteolysis system, such as autophagy-lysosome and ubiquitin-proteasome systems (54,55).…”

“…Виконана робота є продовженням проведених нами досліджень щодо фетальної топографії великогомілкового нерва [16,19]. Особливості топографії великогомілкового нерва, а саме місце початку та характер галуження у товщі триголового м'яза литки сприяє пошуку новітніх методик відновлення пошкоджених м'язів, що узгоджується з публікаціями деяких авторів [6,8]. Проведене дослідження доповнює фрагментарні дані [12,13] 2.…”
