Adiponectin in Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia Nervosa

Abstract: To study the role of adiponectin, a novel adipocyte-specific secreted protein, on the pathophysiology of eating disorders, circulating levels of fasting adiponectin, leptin, insulin, and glucose were measured in 31 female patients with anorexia nervosa (AN) and in 11 with bulimia nervosa. Hormone levels were compared with 16 age-matched, normal body weight controls, six healthy constitutionally thin subjects, and nine obese subjects. Moreover, changes in levels were reevaluated after nutritional treatment and … Show more

“…It is probable that the low serum leptin level in the patient reported here is primarily due to his low BMI. Such low levels of leptin have been reported in patients with anorexia nervosa, where the BMI was similar to that initially reported for our patient (34). We believe that in this patient, the pubertal delay was the result of the very low levels of serum leptin, both normal and mutant, with the increased bioactivity of the latter not being able to compensate in terms of pubertal initiation.…”

“…This is likely to be due to reduced binding of one of the assay's antibodies to the variant leptin. Low levels of serum leptin are associated with both constitutional delay of growth and puberty (31,32) and with anorexia nervosa (33,34), while serum leptin levels are positively correlated with body fat mass across a wide range of BMI in anorexic, normal weight and obese subjects (34). For patients with CDGP, although absolute levels of leptin are low, levels after adjustment for BMI are increased (35).…”

“…Although speculative, patients with lower adiposity may have increased susceptibility to NAFLD due to lower levels of adiponectin, an adipocytokine that increases fatty acid oxidation and decreases inflammation [24]. Adiponectin, although not measured in this study, has been shown to be low in NAFLD [25] and in some patients with AN [26]. The relationship between low adiponectin and NAFLD has been described in overweight patients [25], but has not been examined in AN.…”

“…Serum adiponectin has been found to be either increased Pannacciulli et al, 2003), normal (Iwahashi et al, 2003) or decreased (Tagami et al, 2004) in AN patients. Likewise, serum plasma resistin levels have been found to be either decreased (Dostalova et al, 2006) or normal (Dolezalova et al, 2007).…”
