Adiponectin Gene Polymorphism and its Association with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus

Abstract: Mutations in different regions of adiponectin gene have been reported to be associated with obesity, atherosclerosis and type 2 diabetes mellitus. The present study was aimed to investigate the association among SNP 45 T [ G of adiponectin gene and type 2 diabetes in South Indian population. 75 clinically diagnosed case of type 2 diabetes were studied and compared with 75 apparently healthy controls. The genotype frequency of SNP45 T [ G in exon 2 of adiponectin gene was determined by PCR based restriction enz… Show more

“…In South Indian population Biswas et al [15] have shown a positive association between SNP ?45T/G and type 2 diabetes mellitus with the odds ratio of 3.797. A study in Romanian patients to assess possible link to prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus, demonstrated no genotype difference between type 2 diabetics and controls.…”

“…Government Medical College, Pune. The sample size was calculated from the previous study of SNP ?45T/G done in Indian population by Biswas D et al [15]. 150 patients of diabetes mellitus (diagnosed as per ADA guidelines) in the period of 2011-2013 were selected by simple random sampling method from out patients Department of Medicine, B. “…Furthermore, the same study delineated the observation that a statistically significant association was observed between the anthropometric indices BMI and WC and T2DM. We primarily focused on gene polymorphism pertaining to SNP + 45 of adiponectin as linked to insulin resistance in the three groups of type 2 diabetics, namely non-obese, overweight and obese, based on a previous report from South India on SNP + 45 of Adiponectin [13], but we carried out the study with reference to thyroid status.…”

“…An Indian study depicted positive association of a particular polymorphism of the adiponectin gene, namely SNP + 45 T > G (rs2241766) with type 2 diabetes mellitus [13]. Although, altered thyroid profile is widely implicated in T2DM, it must be said in all fairness that limited documentation is available implicating adiponectin gene polymorphism in insulin resistance associated with altered thyroid status.…”
