Adhesion Improvement between Epoxy and Stainless Steel Using a Silane Coupling Agent in an Atmospheric Plasma Process

Abstract: 3‐Aminopropyltriethoxysilane coatings have been deposited on stainless steel (SS) samples by means of an atmospheric pressure dielectric barrier discharge as an adhesive promotion layer in epoxy resin/SS composites. A multi‐diagnostic analytical approach (FTIR, XPS) was used for the chemical characterization of the deposited coating with regard to improvement of adhesively bonded joint strength. The effect of a plasma post‐treatment after the plasma coating deposition was compared to a thermal post‐treatment. … Show more

“…The surface roughness, joints geometry and glue line thickness are important parameters that greatly affect the mechanical performance of the joint (Azinović et al 2018;Budhe et al 2015;Chans et al 2013;Peng and Zhang 2018). The selection of an appropriate surface modification to increase the effectiveness of a joint depends on the material to be bonded and the bonding asset (Da Ponte et al 2015;Williams et al 2014).…”

“…The use of silane has been shown to increase the interfacial strength between organics and inorganics. Silane has been used for providing or improving adhesion strength between pairs of compounds such as metal and rubber , metal and resin , rubber and resin , glass and resin , and biomaterials . Aisawa et al reported a method for adhesion of carbon steel and natural rubber by functionalized silane .…”

“…They have the ability to bind diverse materials such as glass, plastics, and granite. The silicone sealants are usually consist of hydroxyl‐terminated polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), fillers, crosslinking agents, and other ingredients such as adhesion promoting agents . They are widely used in construction .…”
