One of the most challenging and demanding endeavors in the field of prosthodontics is the rehabilitation of an edentulous mandible. Implants have been used to support mandibular or maxillary prosthetic rehabilitation. Advantages of using implants are increased retention, increased chewing ability, and also easy access to oral hygiene procedures. For decades, the use of telescopic and conical crowns are in practice to connect natural teeth and not many cases have been reported in the literature of telescopic crowns placed on implants to support the prosthesis. Telescopic crowns provide the best possible distribution of force to the abutment teeth and can improve the patient’s oral health-related quality of life. The use of telescopic crowns as attachments for implant-supported overlying prostheses may be a viable treatment option for edentulous mandible. The functional and the aesthetic enhancement by telescopic retainers are favorable features for many challenging situations. This case report discusses a 60-year-old male, who reported to the department of prosthodontics with three implants and two bi-cortical screws that were placed in a completely edentulous mandibular arch by a private practitioner one year back and this situation was prosthodontically managed by us with an implant-supported telescopic removable prosthesis.

Core-shell structures are the most common type of composite material nanostructures due to their multifunctional properties. Silver nanoparticles show broad antimicrobial activity, but the safety of their utilization still remains an issue to tackle. In many applications, the silver core is coated with inorganic shell to reduce the metal toxicity. This article presents the synthesis of various materials based on silver and silica nanoparticles, including SiO2@Ag, Ag@SiO2, and sandwich nanostructures—Ag@SiO2@Ag—and the morphology of these nanomaterials based on transmission electron microscopy (TEM), UV-Vis spectroscopy, and FT-IR spectroscopy. Moreover, we conducted the angle measurements due to the strong relationship between the level of surface wettability and cell adhesion efficiency. The main aim of the study was to determine the cytotoxicity of the obtained materials against two types of human skin cells—keratinocytes (HaCaT) and fibroblasts (HDF). We found that among all the obtained structures, SiO2@Ag and Ag@SiO2 showed the lowest cell toxicity and very high half-maximal inhibitory concentration. Moreover, the measurements of the contact angle showed that Ag@SiO2 nanostructures were different from other materials due to their superhydrophilic nature. The novel approach presented here shows the promise of implementing core-shell type nanomaterials in skin-applied cosmetic or medical products.

Preparation and Properties of Environmentally Friendly Marine Antifouling Coatings Based on a Collaborative Strategy

Long-term and green marine antifouling coatings are an important means to prolong the service life of ships and other marine instruments and equipment. To accomplish this, we prepared three new green and high-efficiency antifouling coatings containing phthalimide derivatives inspired by capsaicin (PDIC-AC) by using a collaborative strategy that incorporates self-polishing, fouling repelling, and antifouling properties. Static simulation tests confirmed that the zinc acrylate resin of the PDIC-AC has excellent self-polishing properties due to changes in the roughness, surface free energy, and mass loss. Antifouling tests demonstrated that both PDIC and PDIC-AC possess efficient antibacterial and anti-algal effects. Moreover, marine field tests showed that the PDIC-AC are highly antifouling for at least 9 months, and their antifouling effect is similar to that of an antifouling coating with chlorothalonil (CT-AC). The collaborative strategy in this study can be used to research and develop long-term environmentally friendly antifouling coatings.
