Adhesion and friction performance of DLC/rubber: The influence of plasma pretreatment

Abstract: Diamond-like carbon (DLC) films are deposited on rubber surfaces to protect the rubber components, and surface pretreatment of the rubber substrates prior to the film deposition can improve the adhesion between the DLC films and the rubber. Thus, the principal purpose of this work concentrates on determining the effects of argon (Ar), oxygen (O2), nitrogen (N2), and hydrogen (H2) plasma pretreatments on the adhesion and friction performance of the DLC films deposited on rubber (DLC/rubber). The results indicat… Show more

“…This is because DLC can provide a C tribochemical layer for wear in the scuffing process, slowing the wear of the cylinder liner. This phenomenon agrees with several previous studies [27,28]. In summary, when the chrome-plated cylinder liner mated with GDC, the scuffing process included fatigue wear transfered to the adhesive, but in the case of DLC, fatigue wear was the only wear mode.…”

“…In C 1s, the photoelectron peak at 284.8 eV proves the existence of CC, CH and CC, and the photoelectron peak at 286.3 is CO and COH. [ 31 ] In O 1s, the photoelectron peak at 532.5 is COH and CO. [ 32 ] The XPS results prove that the plasma treatment under air atmosphere produces some oxygen‐containing functional groups on the surface of silica, and the bonding grafting between Si69 and silica.…”

“…DLC films have the characteristics of high hardness and chemical inertness. They can be deposited not only on the traditional metal matrix, but also on the rubber matrix to improve the self-lubricating properties of the matrix [14]. However, the thermal hybridization of C-C bonds, relaxation of the structure, and graphitization transition have been demonsctrated to occur once the working temperature exceeds 200 °C, which increases the friction coefficient of DLC films and drastically reduce their service life.…”
