Adenovirus Serotype 3 and 7 Infection with Acute Respiratory Failure in Children in Taiwan, 2010–2011

Abstract: ObjectiveIncreased incidence of adenovirus infection in children was noticed since September 2010 in Taiwan and severe cases requiring intensive care were noted later. We did this study to find the clinical characteristics and risk factors associated with severe adenovirus infection.Patients and MethodsWe collected cases of severe adenovirus infection between November 2010 and June 2011 to analyze their clinical characteristics in two medical centers in northern Taiwan. “…Ad3 is considered to be a widely distributed human pathogen. Studies from the United States and Europe show that Ad3 infections occur more often in adolescents and adults (12)(13)(14)(15), while studies from Asia indicate that Ad3 is prevalent in young children, often causing severe respiratory symptoms (16)(17)(18). Ad14 is an important research and clinical object because of the recent appearance of a new strain (Ad14P1).…”

“…[12][13][14][15][16][17] Only in 12 cases, HAdV was detected in the CSF by culture or PCR methods; 11,18-22 qPCR, as performed in our patient, was only used in 2 studies. 14,19 In relatively few cases, the CSF white cell count was reported. Several patients had no pleocytosis (ie, white cell count < 10/mm 3 ) 15 ; in the remaining cases, the CSF white cell count was typically below 300/mm 3 .…”
