“…Thus, the mucinous proliferation described in these cases had a benign behavior. Our cases were more similar to those described by Itoh et al 18 and Jin et al 8 In both studies, the mucinous glands had an irregular architecture and distribution in the smooth muscle, and were characterized by a mucinous columnar cell with goblet cell appearance without atypia or mitotic figures. No basal cell layer was described in these 2 reports, but no staining with p63 or other basal cell markers was included.…”

“…A series of 6 patients with a solitary, peripheral PH consisting of a predominant smooth muscle proliferation strikingly associated with a proliferation of irregularly shaped and disperse mucinous columnar glands is reported in this article. Similar cases have been previously described under various names/definitions, such as “adenoleiomyomatous hamartoma,” “fibroleiomyomatous hamartoma,” “cystoadenomatous hamartoma,” and “pulmonary hamartoma with mucous glands.” 8,16-20 Another interesting case consisting of predominant mucous glands with a minority of smooth muscle was reported by Zhang et al 21 as “peripheral mucous gland adenoma with smooth muscle stroma.”…”

“…A major study of PH showed that 86.9% of PH comprised epithelial components . Although no reports have described the proportion of epithelial components in detail, a few cases of PH show prominent epithelial entrapments . This rare variant of PH, which is composed of smooth muscle fascicles and tubular or cleft‐like entrapped epithelial components without other mesenchymal components, has been described using different diagnostic terms, including fibroleiomyomatous hamartoma, hamartoma, adenomyomatous hamartoma, or adenofibroma .…”

“…The differential diagnoses based on the cytologic features were mucin-rich lesions including mesenchymal tumors such as myxoma, hamartoma, extraskeletal myxoid chondrosarcoma (EMCS) and low cellular epithelial tumors such as mucinous epithelial tumor [ 1 , 6 , 7 ]. Cytologic findings of pulmonary hamartoma are scantly cellular smears composed of bland-looking spindle and stellate cells and fibromyxoid materials in serosanguinous background [ 6 ]. Pulmonary hamartoma is composed of predominantly chondroid connective tissue, adipocytes and fibroblasts with intervening nests of bland-looking epithelial cells.…”
