Adenomyoepithelioma of the breast with late pulmonary metastases – case report and review of the literature

Abstract: BackgroundAdenomyoepithelioma (AME) of the breast is a rare tumour of unpredictable clinical behaviour. Most of the tumours are benign with some giving local recurrences or distant metastases.Case PresentationWe report a case of late lung metastases in a woman with a history of breast adenomyoepithelioma. Partial lobectomy was performed for lung lesions and initial diagnosis was epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma.ConclusionCareful slide’s revision of both breast and pulmonary lesions showed identical microscop… Show more

“…The definitive diagnosis of AME and myoepithelial carcinoma is based on histological and immunohistochemical findings . AME is a tumor consisting of epithelial and myoepithelial cells and is characterized by bicellular proliferation . Myoepithelioma is a tumor that consists of myoepithelial cells but lacks epithelial cells .…”

“…Adenomyoepithelioma (AME) is as very rare type of benign tumor of the breast. Many AMEs have demonstrated benign behavior and are often cured with excision with negative margins, but some have exhibited malignant transformation of the myoepithelium, glandular epithelium, or both [1][2][3][4][5][6]. In this report, the case of a patient with repeated local recurrences and malignant transformation is presented.…”

“…Due to its benign behaviour, complete surgical excision alone is usually an adequate treatment (Nadelman et al, 2006). However, malignant transformation of a specific component, either epithelial cells or myoepithelial cells, or both, has been documented (Yang et al, 2014;Korolczuk et al, 2016).…”
