Adenomatous Polyp With Intestinal Metaplasia of the Esophagus (Barrett Esophagus) in a Dog

Abstract: Multiple endoscopic biopsy specimens of esophageal mucosa were received from a 13-year-old castrated male standard Poodle. The dog was presented for painful swallowing. Endoscopically, the distal aspect of the esophagus was inflamed with a polypoid mass that protruded into the esophageal lumen. Histologically, the stratified squamous epithelium overlying the mass and lining the adjacent esophageal mucosa was replaced by papillary projections covered by columnar epithelium with goblet cells supported by a fibro… Show more

“…BE is considered a premalignant condition because of stepwise progression from intestinal metaplasia to dysplasia and finally AC (Cameron et al ) and ASC (Noguchi et al ). A case of canine BE with an oesophageal adenomatous polyp has recently been reported (Gibson et al ). In the present case, ASC might have developed from BE following irritation of the oesophageal mucosa due to chronic vomiting and regurgitation, because the oesophageal mucosa consisted of not only neoplastic but also non‐neoplastic columnar epithelial cells.…”

“…In dogs and cats, esophagitis and intestinal metaplasia are histological defined diseases (21)(22)(23)(24). Nevertheless, similar as in the present study, biopsies from the esophagus are rarely obtained during routine gastroscopy in veterinary practice settings.…”

“…This is largely due to animals rarely developing a natural BE phenotype . In fact, there have only been three reported cases of animals developing spontaneous BE, two of which were in dogs and one in a baboon . Of the two cases reported in dogs, one also progressed to EAC .…”
