Adenomatoid odontogenic tumor (AOT) is an uncommon benign odontogenic lesion, with debatable histogenesis and variable histopathology. A systematic and diverse insight into the evolution, clinical presentation, histology, and immunohistochemical findings of this lesion is reviewed and presented. We reviewed the data published from 2000 to 2014 of approximately 255 cases that revealed a significant change in the incidence of predominant site involved, in contrast to the findings published by Reichart. We have also included the chronological order of events leading to the coining of the term AOT, which shows the curiosity that has been dedicated to understanding the lesion. Immunohistochemistry is considered to be a hallmark in pathology for learning the molecular pathogenesis and giving a correct final diagnosis. Several markers have been used to investigate and understand this lesion, and a compilation of the findings has been tabulated.

a b s t r a c tAdenomatoid odontogenic tumor (AOT) is a rare odontogenic tumor with limited growth and usually associated with an unerupted permanent tooth. It is a benign lesion, with a low rate of recurrence after surgical treatment. This is a case report of an 11-year-old female with an asymptomatic tumor growth on the maxilla and palatal displacement of the lateral incisor. A unilocular lesion surrounding the coronal impacted right upper canine and the displacement of premolars were observed radiographically. After incisional biopsy, the tumor was diagnosed as AOT. The enucleation of the lesion and the removal of the impacted canine was performed. Four months later, the patient had not shown any signs of recurrence and was referred for orthodontic treatment. New surgical procedure was performed to remove the gums that covered the premolars to promote their eruption. Five years later, the premolars are in position in the dental arch and there are no signs of recurrence of the lesion. É uma lesão benigna, com baixa taxa de recorrência após tratamento cirúrgico. Relato de caso de uma menina de 11 anos de idade com crescimento tumoral assintomático na maxila e deslocamento palatino do incisivo lateral. Radiograficamente, foi observada uma lesão unilocular em torno da coroa do canino superior direito impactado e deslocamento dos pré-molares. Após a biópsia inci-sional, o tumor foi diagnosticado como TOA. A enucleação da lesão e do canino impactado foi realizada. Quatro meses depois, o paciente não apresentou sinais de recorrência e foi encaminhado para tratamento ortodôntico. Um novo procedimento cirúrgico foi realizado para remover a gengiva que cobria os pré-molares para promover sua erupção. El tumor odontogénico adenomatoide es una neoplasia benigna que corresponde al 2-7 % de todos los tumores odontogénicos en la cavidad oral. Más de la mitad de los casos se diagnostica en adolescentes, principalmente en mujeres. Es una lesión de crecimiento lento pero progresivo, no invasiva, y se puede confundir con un quiste odontogénico si no se usan las herramientas diagnósticas adecuadas. Reporte de caso: El reporte describe el caso de una niña de 13 años de edad con un tumor odontogénico adenomatoide del subtipo central-folicular en la región mandibular anterior izquierda, que afectaba el canino mandibular izquierdo que estaba incluido. La paciente fue manejada de forma conservadora con descompresión de la lesión e irrigación de la cavidad. Posteriormente, se le realizó un examen tomográfico donde se encontraron calcificaciones iniciales dentro de la cavidad. More than 50% AOTs are diagnosed in female adolescents. It is noninvasive and grows slowly. It can easily be misdiagnosed due to its resemblance with an odontogenic cyst. Case report: The report describes the case of a 13-year old girl with a central follicular AOT on the left side of the mandible with her permanent mandibular left canine included in the lesion. Treatment included decompression and irrigation of the lesion cavity. Later, a tomogram showed calcifications within the cavity.
