Purpose-The purpose of this paper is to make the case for bringing compassion to students in educational settings, preschool through graduate school (PK-20). Design/methodology/approach-First, the author defines what is meant by "compassion" and differentiates it from the related constructs. Next, the author discusses the importance of bringing compassion into education, thinking specifically about preschool, K-12 (elementary and middle school/junior high/high school), college students, and graduate students (e.g. law, medical, nurses, counselors and therapists-intraining). The author then reviews the scant empirical literature on compassion in education and makes recommendations for future research. In the final section, the author makes specific and practical recommendations for the classroom (e.g. how to teach and evaluate compassion in PK-20). Findings-While there is a fair amount of research on compassion with college students, and specifically regarding compassion for oneself, as the author reviews in this paper, the field is wide open in terms of empirical research with other students and examining other forms of compassion. Research limitations/implications-This is not a formal review or meta-analysis. Practical implications-This paper will be a useful resource for teachers and those interested in PK-20 education. Social implications-This paper highlights the problems and opportunities for bringing compassion into education settings. Originality/value-To date, no review of compassion in PK-20 exists.

In Their Own Words: An Analysis of the Experiences of Medical Interns Participating in a Prospective Cohort Study of Depression

Purpose To compare the subjective experiences of interns with and without symptoms of depression using a mixed-methods approach. Method In 2007-2008, interns from six institutions were screened for depression before and during internship using an online survey that included the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9). At the end of internship, participants were asked what made the year difficult, easy, and memorable, and how they had changed. Computerized lexical and qualitative thematic analyses were performed to analyze their free-text responses. Results Sixty-three percent (244/388) of invited interns participated in the original cohort study. Of those, 42% (103/244) answered the open-ended questions for this analysis. Thirty-five percent (36/103) screened positive for clinically significant depression (i.e., PHQ-9 score ≥ 10) during their intern year. Respondents with symptoms of depression were more likely to report problems with cynicism, exhaustion, and stress, while those without them were more likely to mention positive patient care and educational experiences. Respondents with symptoms of depression preferentially described experiences that “broke” their confidence, sense of wellbeing, and belief in the medical profession, while those who did not described profoundly positive, life-changing experiences regarding interactions with patients and supportive colleagues, through which they grew personally and professionally. Conclusions Depression during internship affects not only objective outcomes like medical errors but also how interns value the profession and themselves, with potentially profound consequences for their future career decisions. Residency programs should implement both reactive interventions targeting depression and proactive interventions promoting resilience and wellbeing to address the issues that lead to depression.

Увод. Депресивни поремећаји сматрају се здравственим проблемом од великог значаја и убрајају се у најраније описане болести у медицини. Циљ рада. Испитати колика је заступљеност депресије, њених облика, међу лекарима у општој медицини, као и повезаност депресивних тегоба са социодемографским карактеристикама. Метод. Спроведена је студија пресека. Узорак су чинили лекари који су били присутни на Конференцији "Дани опште медицине'', која је 24-25. марта 2018. одржана у Београду. Заступљеност депресије међу лекарима у општој медицини процењена је коришћењем упитника PHQ-9. Подаци су представљени као фреквенције (%), Пирсонов (Pearson) χ 2-тест је коришћен за мерење разлике између варијабли и утврђивање узрочника појаве депресије, и обрађени су софтверским статистичким пакетом SPSS 20. Статистичка значајност је дефинисана за ниво p<0,05. Резултати. У истраживању је учествовало 394 лекара, 43 (10,9%) мушкарца и 351 (89,1%) жена, просечне старости 53±10,4 година. Од укупног броја анкетираних, неки облик депресије имао је 51 (12,9%), благи облик депресије 32 (62,7%), умерен 9 (17,6%), тежак облик 10 (19,6%) лекара. Није постојала повезаност депресије са социодемографским карактеристикама испитаника осим са годинама старости. Запослени са благим и умереним обликом депресије имали су 50 година и више. Тешки облик депресије показивали су лекари старости од 40 до 49 година. Закључак. Преваленција депресије међу лекарима опште медицине износила је 12,9%. Појава депресије повезана је са годинама старости. Потребна су даља истраживања како би се установиле ефикасне стратегије за спречавање и лечење депресије.
