Additive genetic parameter estimates for heifer pregnancy and subsequent reproduction in Angus females.

Abstract: A primary objective of this study was to determine whether the binary traits heifer pregnancy (HP) and subsequent rebreeding (SR) were heritable in an experimental population of Angus cattle. A second objective was to determine the nature of the additive genetic relationships among HP, SR, and stayability (S(5/1)) in the same population. Heifer pregnancy was defined as the observation of a heifer conceiving and remaining pregnant to palpation at 120 d, given exposure during the breeding season. Subsequent rebr… Show more

“…A lower sire variance of 0.072 for STAY was estimated with the heritability estimated on the underlying scale as 0.27. This estimate is higher than the heritablities estimated for STAY by Snelling et al (1995) 0.09 and 0.20; Doyle et al (2000) of 0.15; Van der Westhuizen et al (2001) which ranged between 0.03 and 0.08 and Silva et al (2003) with heritabilities ranging 0.11 to 0.17 for Nelore cattle. However, it corresponds to heritability estimates using threshold models by Martinez et al (2002) on Hereford cattle ranging from 0.13 to 0.49.…”

“…In beef cattle, focus has been on calving date (Bourdon and Brinks, 1983;Buddenberg et al, 1990), or the related calving day (Ponzoni, 1992) or days to calving (Meyer et al, 1990;Johnston and Bunter, 1996;Donoghue et al, 2004a). Recently, heifer pregnancy status and the outcome of subsequent rebreeding have attracted interest (Evans et al, 1999;Doyle et al, 2000;Eler et al, 2004). Calving success (CS) has been studied as well (Meyer et al, 1990;Mercadante et al, 2003;Donoghue et al, 2004d).…”
