Addition of turmeric in feed on growth and survival rate of Nilasa red tilapia (Oreochromis sp.)

Abstract: Nilasa red tilapia (Oreochromis sp.) is a Cangkringan tilapia produced from cross-breeding of 4-(four) parents, namely red tilapia from Thailand, NIFI-Thailand, Singapore, and the Philippines. The feed reuirements for fish farming activities reaches around 60%, so one way to increase feed efficiency is to use feed additives. Curcumin in turmeric can stimulate fish appetite and increase absorption of food substances. The aimed of this study was to determine the addition of turmeric to the growth and survival of… Show more

“…It was as reported by Kusumah (2018) that turmeric flour can increase good microorganisms in the digestive tract to increase microbial activity, which leads to optimal absorption of nutrients. Furthermore Cahyani et al (2021), reported that red tilapia given turmeric flour supplements could increase growth such as increasing the SGR and the survival percentage could reach above 80%. Turmeric (Curcuma domestica Val) is a spice and medicinal plant from Southeast Asia that can be used as a feed additive because it is easily obtained at low prices and contains curcumin essential oil.…”

“…The curcumin in turmeric works to increase palatability, thereby stimulating the fish's appetite, which results in increased growth. In addition, curcumin can increase the body's resistance of fish, so that indirectly with a healthy fish condition, the fish's appetite will increase, which has an impact on the weight of the fish (Cahyani et al, 2021).…”

“…Research on tilapia is generally related to aquaculture activities. Research about hatchery activities is also needed, including the use of broodstock in hatcheries, especially regarding the morphological characters of the female broodstock so that they could produce quality seeds [10,11]. Morphological evaluation, especially morphometric evaluation, has been carried out by [12,13,14].…”
