The Lean Six Sigma (LSS) philosophy and sustainability have become topics of interest since the 1990s; they have generally been analyzed together since 2012. Numerous professionals, managers, and researchers have sought methodologies by which to assess their impact and know their effectiveness within companies. During the past decade, the application of partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) has been widely accepted in various modeling, prediction, or multivariate analyses as a way to measure the impact of LSS on sustainability. This study conducts a literature review to identify the use of PLS-SEM in measuring the impact of LSS on sustainability. A systematic review methodology has been employed, applying five search criteria to three scientific database platforms. This approach has been helpful to identify PLS-SEM as a valuable methodology for measuring the impact of LSS on sustainability. One of the research findings is that LSS practices positively impact 83% of economic indicators, 78% of environmental indicators, and 70% of social indicators. This article creates a theoretical foundation for future research on these issues, outlining research opportunities to generate future studies. It also allows researchers and managers who are interested in improving sustainability indicators to access valuable knowledge regarding what types of LSS tools could be used.

PurposeThe need to improve sustainability in manufacturing firms, which would allow them to reduce the emission of pollutants and the generation of industrial waste, has stimulated the adoption of circular economy (CE) alongside lean manufacturing (LM) practices to significantly improve the sustainable performance of organizations. However, empirical evidence provided in previous studies and that has related the practices of LM, CE and sustainable performance do not allow establishing an interconnection between these three concepts. Therefore, this paper fills this gap in the literature by exploring the relationship between these three concepts.Design/methodology/approachA quantitative study in which data were collected from 460 managers working in the automotive industry in Mexico was conducted. The data allowed the testing and validation of four hypotheses through the use of partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS SEM).FindingsThe results obtained suggest that LM practices have a significant positive influence both on sustainable performance and CE. In turn, the results also demonstrate the existence of a significant positive relationship between CE and the sustainable performance of manufacturing firms in the automotive industry as well as that CE has a positive role in mediating the interconnection between LM practices and sustainable performance.Practical implicationsThe results obtained from the present study will allow entrepreneurs in the automotive industry and industry professionals as well as government authorities to formulate more effective policies and strategies to support the improvement of environmental sustainability performance in the manufacturing sector.Originality/valueThis is one of the first studies that have investigated the relationship between LM, CE and sustainable performance, particularly, in the automotive sector.

The field of product development (PD) has an excellent opportunity to achieve the benefits of lean principles. The literature on lean product development (LPD) is growing and is extensive, but it needs to be more systematic. A distinct, comprehensive, and up-to-date review of LPD literature is necessary. Motivated by studying and understanding contemporary themes and the current trends in the LPD research area, this article reviewed 85 previously published papers across three scientific databases from 2011 to 2022. Using literature review methodology, we determined for every article: research motivation or gap filled, key findings and significant contributions, and suggestions for future research. That helps structure the field of research into nine domains according to the gaps the authors wish to fill. The results indicate that over the past decade, the LPD literature has shown trends towards synergy of LPD with green, sustainability, circular economy, industry 4.0, and digitalisation. Finally, the article proposes six future research directions.
