Adaptive Dynamic Radio Open-source Intelligent Team (ADROIT): Cognitively-controlled Collaboration among SDR Nodes

Abstract: We have created a sensor-sharing protocol that uses cognition to increase performance by choosing protocol parameters based on the current environment and the past relationships between environment and performance. We have constructed a prototype of the protocol, and experimented with it in a four-node outdoor testbed. Our testbed is part of a larger effort, ADROIT, which seeks to create cognitive teams of software-defined radios [1]. 1

“…Similarly, a USRP2 in receiving mode requires a decimation rate in order to reduce the sample rate before transferring the received signal to the host computer. The BBN 802.11b project includes a transmitter and a receiver [32]. A previous version of this project was an 802.11b receiver implemented on USRP.…”

“…explored all permutations of 232 PN sequences used in the IEEE 802.15.4 standard and found that since the minimum distance is 12 and maximum distance is 20, there are 145, 742, 202 chip sequences can be mapped to each symbol. The author thus exploited this encoding redundancy, and assigned a certain amount of chips in a PN sequence to represent the data of the steganographic channel.…”

“…Sentient beings overcome similar problems through online experimentation and continuous learning [55]. Similar approaches have discovered the best networking protocol to deploy in the network [56], the best radio parameters [57], found the best bit-rate for wireless communication [58], or reinvented modern technology [59].…”

“…If multiple software stacks can coexist and operate concurrently, we have virtualized the software radio, sharing some hardware resources, but providing multiple ways to reach one or more networks. Finally, multiple software radios could collaborate [16] to provide a more resilient set of access points, analogous to the pool of computers accessible through cloud computing infrastructures.…”
