Adaptive Coherent/Non-Coherent Spatial Modulation Aided Unmanned Aircraft Systems

Abstract: Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are envisioned to be an important part of the device-centric Internet-of-Things (IoT). These bespoke Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UASs) that support UAVs significantly differ from traditional terrestrial and aeronautical networks, both of which are evolving towards their next-generation forms. The major challenges of the UAS include (1) the augmented interference due to strong Line-of-Sight (LoS) (2) the dynamic shadowing effects owing to 3-D aerial maneuvering, (3) the excessive … Show more

“…Multiple aircraft antennas can provide significant diversity gain up to 16 dB in the shadowing area, and the diversity gain is typically less than 5 dB or 6 dB outside the shadowing region [91]. The space time codes are suggested to overcome this array antennas interference, whereas spatial modulation can improve the spectral efficiency [94], [95].…”

“…According to (28), it is plausible that the proposed lowcomplexity detector is capable of reducing the complexity to about 25%, 12.5%, 6.25% and 3.125% of that of the ML detector for QPSK, 8-PSK, 16-PSK and 32-PSK, respectively.…”

“…in which N k and M k are the noise and MTI components of kth frequency bin. Assuming the Low Pass Filters (LPF) as ideal with 0dB attenuation in its passband, based on the waveform normalization (4), N k follows a complex Gaussian distribution with mean of zero and variance of n 0 . The characteristics of MTI components {M k } will be explained in next section.…”
