Differentially-Encoded Rectangular Spatial Modulation Approaches the Performance of Its Coherent Counterpart

Abstract: A simplified rectangular differential spatial modulation (S-RDSM) scheme is conceived for massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems dispensing with the channel state information (CSI). In the proposed S-RDSM scheme, the information bits are first mapped to a conventional SM symbol and then rectangular differential encoding is invoked between a pair of SM symbols. Then a non-coherent detector relying on a forgetting factor is developed, which requires no CSI at the receiver. Explicitly, a low-comple… Show more

“…The pioneering scheme [30] established in the early 2000s relies on square unitary matrices. By contrast, in 2017, a new approach of nonsquare differential MIMO [32][33][34][35][36] was proposed. This new approach maps the classic unitary matrix to a nonsquare matrix, which benefically improves the transmission rate linearly.…”

“…To unleash the potential of massive access in mMTC, spatial modulation based on multiple transmit antennas at the MTDs and massive multi-input multi-output (mMIMO) BSs were considered in [14], [23], and [24]. In particular, spatial modulation is a low-complexity and energy-efficient multipleantenna scheme that utilizes a single or fewer radio frequency (RF) chains than the number of antenna elements [25]- [28]. By encoding part of the information bits onto the activated antenna elements, spatial modulation is capable of enhancing the data rate at a low cost and low power consumption [26].…”

“…Besides, [23] presented STBC aided RDSM (STBC-RDSM) scheme for massive MIMO downlink communications, which combines RDSM and STBC to reap their respective advantages. The authors in [24] proposed a simplified RDSM scheme and assigned a new design metric for forgetting factor to mitigate error propagation.…”
