A significant proportion of the African continent is conducive for animal agricultural production, due to its historical experience and available resources to accommodate and nurture various indigenous and exotic animal species and breeds. With food security being a global challenge, animal products can play an important role as nutrient dense food sources in human diets, particularly in Africa. However, this does not seem to reach its full potential in practice, due to numerous reasons that have not been adequately addressed. Animal welfare reservations can be highlighted as one of the major contributing factors to the curbed progress. The consequences have been scientifically proven to affect product quality and market access. However, in the African community, the concept of animal welfare has not been fully embraced. While there are international animal welfare standards in the developed world, there are inherent factors that hinder adoption of such initiatives in most developing regions, particularly among communal farmers. These include cultural norms and practices, social ranking, socio-economic status, available resources, information dissemination and monitoring tools. Therefore, there is need to harmonize what is internationally required and what is feasible to accommodate global variability. The protocols followed to ensure and evaluate farm animal welfare require regular investigation, innovation and a sustainable approach to enhance animal productivity, efficiency and product quality. Additionally, investing in animal wellbeing and health, as well as empowering communities with significant knowledge, has a potential to improve African livelihoods and contribute to food security. This review seeks to highlight the concept of animal welfare in relation to livestock and food production in African conditions.

Єфрємова, 25, м Дніпро, 49027, Україна Вивчено основні показники продуктивності імпортних баранівплідників породи новозеландський корідель та їх нащадків І та ІІ генетико-екологічних генерацій за період їх господарського використання в нових екологічних умовах.Аналіз рівня продуктивності завезених тварин за період розведення в нових природно-екологічних умовах показав, що найбільш високою мінливістю у баранів на першому році утримання, тобто в 24 місяці, характеризується настриг вовни -18,0-19,6%, а найменшою жива маса і довжина вовни, відповідно у 36-та 48 місяців -7,6-7,9%, якщо середні показники живої маси у тварин імпортованої інтродукції найвищого показника досягали у 4-річному віці, то довжина вовни і настриги -у 2-3 роки.Показники стану господарсько-корисних ознак плідників І та ІІ генетико-екологічних генерацій свідчать, що вони у відповідні вікові періоди проявляли кращі адаптаційні якості, ніж завезені тварини, про що вказує більш висока їх продуктивність у відповідний період.Визначення найважливіших параметрів мінливості і спадкової обумовленості ознак показало, що найбільш високий ступінь сталості рангів за фенотиповим проявом живої маси у баранів породи новозеландський корідель є в 2-4-річному віці і становить 0,56±0,08, а у маток в 2-3 роки -0,49±0,09, коли досягнута і максимальна жива маса.Що стосується настригів вовни, то високий ступінь повторюваності спостерігається у баранів у віці 1-2 роки -0,48±0,09, а у вівцематок у віці 1-3 роки -0,42±0,08.Найбільш висока повторюваність довжини вовни у баранів встановлена у віці 1-3 роки -0,35±0,07, а у вівцематок у тому ж віці -0,27±0,08, сталість цих ознак висока (Р>0,999).Кореляція між живою масою і довжиною вовни була від'ємною, але з віком мала тенденцію до зменшення від -0,26 до -0,11. This study investigated the effects of rumen-protected L-tryptophan or L-ascorbic acid supplementation on the productivity of lactating Holstein cows during a high-temperature period. Thirty cows were assigned to three dietary groups: control (CON), treatment 1 (TRT 1; rumen-protected L-tryptophan, 20 g/cow/d), and treatment 2 (TRT 2; rumen-protected L-ascorbic acid, 20 g/cow/d). As the high-temperature period progressed, the decrease in milk yield and dry matter intake (DMI) in the TRT 1 and TRT 2 groups was lower than that in the CON group. The total protein level in the plasma of the TRT 1 group was higher than that in the CON group (p < 0.05). Milk melatonin concentration was higher in the TRT 1 group than in the CON and TRT 2 groups (p < 0.05). Thus, the present results indicate that rumen-protected L-tryptophan or L-ascorbic acid has positive effects in preventing declines in DMI and milk yield by reducing heat stress in Holstein cows. In particular, rumen-protected L-tryptophan is considered effective in increasing the melatonin concentration in milk.
