Interpersonal Emotion Regulation (IER) refers to a group of emotion regulation strategies through which people regulate their emotions by utilizing the presence of others. Studies focusing on IER have recently increased, probably due to the availability of a psychometrically sound IER measure, the Interpersonal Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (IERQ; Hofmann et al.Cognitive Therapy and Research, 40(3), 341-356, 2016). The present study sought to examine the psychometric properties of the Turkish version of IERQ with a sample of Turkish adolescents. Results confirmed the four-factor structure of IERQ with a group of 269 adolescents between ages 14 to 17. Turkish adolescent version of IERQ showed adequate levels of reliability and construct validity through the subscales' significant correlations with dimensions of intrapersonal emotion regulation and social problem-solving. Adolescence is a period where close relationships with peers are initiated, and relying on peers at times of distress becomes prominent. The adolescent version of IERQ provides the opportunity to investigate IER patterns in adolescents, which is crucial for their psychological adjustment.

OBJECTIVE Various psychological factors play a role in the development of nocturnal enuresis (NE) which causes significant distress both on children and their parents. However, current studies cannot attribute a role to the psychiatric conditions that cause or result from NE. This study aims to reveal some psychiatric parameters related to the parents of patients with NE which may play a role in the etiopathogenesis of NE. METHODS Seventy-nine parents of primary 53 NE children and 78 parents of 44 healthy children were enrolled to the study. Parents of children with daytime voiding symptoms, additional comorbidity, or secondary enuresis were excluded from the study. Age- and sex-matched parents of healthy children with the absence of voiding symptoms were included as the control group. Parental Reflective Functioning (RF) Questionnaire, Interpersonal Emotion Regulation (ER) Questionnaire, and Zarit Caregiver Burden Scale were recorded to measure psychiatric conditions. RESULTS Parents of children with NE showed significantly poorer RF and ER abilities compared to the control group. Moreover, the perceived caregiver burden was also significantly higher in parents of NE patients. Correlation analyses also showed that RF and ER are negatively correlated with caregiver burden. CONCLUSION This study revealed that the parents of primary NE patients may have difficulty mentalizing and ER in interpersonal relationships. These difficulties may be a cause or a consequence of the NE. In addition, our findings showed that parents of NE patients perceive more caregiving burden. Therefore, it may be advisable for parents of NE patients to seek psychological counseling.

Background This study aimed to investigate the relationship between interpersonal emotion regulation (IER) and social anxiety symptoms and the mediating role of negative mood regulation expectancies (NMRE). We hypothesised that IER is positively associated with social anxiety symptoms, controlling for depression and intrapersonal emotion regulation strategies of suppression and reappraisal, and NMRE mediate this relationship. Methods Study 1 was conducted with a student sample ( N = 400) and Study 2 included a community sample with 271 participants. Results Study 1 showed that, of four IER strategies, soothing and social modeling were positively, and perspective-taking was negatively related to social anxiety symptoms controlling for depression, suppression and reappraisal. Study 2 replicated these findings and extended them by showing the mediated relationship between the two IER strategies (i.e. enhancing positive affect and soothing) and social anxiety symptoms through NMRE. Conclusions The results contribute to the limited research on IER by portraying its relationship with social anxiety symptoms and revealing the mediating role of NMRE in this relationship.
