“…The role of climate change responses in driving risks is not limited to unintended consequences, though: a decision-maker might very consciously accept an increased risk elsewhere as long as a climate change response delivers a solution to that decision maker's core concern. Clearer understanding and recognition of different people, populations, and ecosystems being affected by different responses, 75 including disproportionate effects, can help us better understand and characterize such risk trade-offs and the values that underpin such choices. Lastly, non-human response can also be included, such as migration of species in response to temperature change.…”

“…Evidence suggests that much of the current efforts to manage risks are exceedingly technical, too often ignoring the voices of the community and knowledges of the practitioners. In a recent paper based on the review of global practice, a group of scholars have argued that adaptation funding has inadvertently worsened vulnerability in the developing world (Eriksen et al., 2021). Two key reasons which the authors pinpoint are i) the practice of designing and implementing projects based on shallow understanding of the vulnerability context, and ii) the limited appreciation of local knowledge in defining the measures of adpatation success.…”

“…Guided by the words of Puig de la Bellacasa (2010Bellacasa ( , 2011Bellacasa ( , 2017, I proposed a generative critique of development as care; as a strategy to overcome the impasse climate-informed development practices "from above" currently find themselves in. In fact, while their solutions for reducing vulnerabilities and enhancing capacities for adaptation and resilience are increasingly adopted around the world, we have enough evidence to suggest that these strategies have been unable to engender transformative action towards more just and liveable futures (Eriksen et al, 2021;Nightingale et al, 2020).…”
