The potential expression of crop productivity is a constant challenge for plant breeders in the face of oscillations in environmental variables, making selection difficult and increasing the operational and methodological costs in obtaining the ideal cultivar for a determined region. The objective of the research was to investigate the effects of genotype x environment interaction in the selection of cowpea lines with high grain yield, adaptability, and genotypic stability simultaneously, in environments of the Northwest region of Rio de Janeiro State, using mixed models (Maximum Restricted Likelihood - REML/Best Linear Unbiased Prediction - BLUP). 27 cowpea genotypes were evaluated in six environments by combining location (Cambuci-RJ and Bom Jesus do Itabapoana-RJ) and year (2016, 2017 and 2018). A randomized block design with four replications was performed. The genetic parameters were estimated via the REML/BLUP procedure, and the selection was based on the harmonic mean method of the relative performance of the genetic values (HMRPGV). A meaningful difference was observed for environment and genotype x environment interaction. The residual variance and the variance of the genotype x environment interaction formed the most significant fractions of the phenotypic variance. Lines 4 (Bico-de-ouro 1-5-24), 6 (Pingo-de-Ouro 1-5-4), 5 (Pingo-de-Ouro 1-5-26), and 9 (Pingo-de-Ouro 1-5-8), stood out as superior in terms of stability and adaptability and grain yield by HMRPGV. Commercial cultivars 13 (BRS-Tumucumaque) and 26 (BRS-Itaim) had high grain yield, adaptability, and specific stability in the evaluated edaphoclimatic conditions.

specific adaptability to favorable (requires a high level of technology) or unfavorable (requires 58 a low level of technology) environments, methodologies that are based on linear regression 59 models have shown promise [4][5][6][7]. Some of the previous methods to determine the adaptability 60 and stability included the ideotype concept [8][9][10][11], and resulted in an improved understanding 61 of the relative behavior of the genotypes from a smaller number of parameters. According to 62 Eeuwijk et al. [12], there are other methodologies to assess the behavior of genotypes that are 63 of note, such as AMMI (Additive Main effects and Multiplicative Interaction) [13] and GGE 64 biplot (Genotype main effects and Genotype x Environment interaction effects) [14]. However, 65 the adaptability and stability analyses still have limitations, especially when used with trials 66 with genetic or statistical imbalances, heterogeneity of residual variances, and genetic 67 covariance. In this context, adaptability and stability analyses that use a mixed model approach 68are an effective alternative to the traditional analyses [15,16]. 69Another relevant factor is that traditional methodologies for the analysis of adaptability 70 and stability, consider a priori, that the behavior of a genotype across environments is linear, 71 which may not be true. As a consequence, recommendations based on these methodologies can 72 be biased. This can be outlined by means of reaction norm models via mixed modeling, as they 73 allow for improved modeling of the behavior of the different genotypes, based mostly on 74 orthogonal polynomials. Among this class of polynomials, the Legendre's polynomials stand 75 out, as they have the ability to describe the structures of variance and covariance between the 76 genetic and environmental components [17]. 77In this way, the use of the reaction norms obtained from the Legendre polynomials can 78 better quantify the adaptability and stability of a set of genotypes evaluated in different 79 environments, aiming for greater accuracy in cultivar recommendations. Thus, the objectives 80 of this investigation were to propose a new methodology for the analysis of adaptability and 81 genotypic stability, based on Legendre polynomials and genotype-ideotype distances.

Beans are grown in different regions of the country, with an estimated average national production of 1.3 million tons in 2018. Their production is affected by nutrient deficiency, disease and / or soil acidity. One way to improve the use of agricultural inputs is to use silicates that are sources of silicon. Observing the importance of calcium silicate in crops of economic interest, the objective was to evaluate different doses of calcium silicate in the development of black beans. The experiment was carried out in pots with a capacity of 2,5 L filled with a typical dystrophic Red Latosol, with acidic pH around 3.88 cmolc / dm3 according to chemical analysis, where 0, 50, 60, 70, 80 and 90% calcium silicate under greenhouse conditions. The bean was harvested after 45 days, where it was verified the fresh mass of the shoot, fresh root mass, root length, plant height, aerial dry mass. The data were submitted to the Tukey test at 5% significance level. From the parameters evaluated fresh shoot mass, fresh root mass, shoot dry mass and plant height showed significant results the application of calcium silicate from the 60% dose, thus demonstrating its importance for the vegetative development of the bean crop.
