Acute Vocal Fold Wound Healing in a Rabbit Model

Abstract: Several authors have eloquently described the characteristics of vocal fold scar, a long-term consequence of vocal fold injury. However, events in the acute stage of mucosal injury, which lead up to fibrosis, have been largely overlooked. The current study describes acute events with regard to mucosal re-formation in a rabbit model. Vocal fold injury was induced surgically. A fibrinous clot was present 1 day after injury. Massive cellular infiltration was noted on day 3, and complete epithelial coverage was ac… Show more

“…Carneiro et al (Carneiro and Scapini 2009) used rabbit s to study vo cal fol d grafts by exposing their vocal folds via a neck incision and laryngofissure. Branski et al (Branski, Rosen et al 2005) studied the healing process of rabbit vocal fold after injury, using a neonatal laryngoscope to access the vocal fold. Campagnolo et al (Campagnolo, Tsuji et al 2010) studied the healing effects of injectable corticosteroids after vocal fold surgery using a custom made laryngoscope for access.…”

“…Максимум клеточной инфильтрации наблюдается ко 2−3-м сут. На 3-й день отмечается ча-стичная эпителизация, к 5-му дню раневая поверхность полностью покрыта утолщенным эпителиальным слоем, появляется матрикс новообразованного коллагена [15,19,20]. Более плотный и неорганизованный коллаген образуется к 10-му дню.…”

“…Normal wound healing takes place as a sequence of well-coordinated events leading to the formation of new tissue. Alterations or therapeutic manipulation during these acute stage events can be very relevant in scar formation 4 . Conventional vocal fold treatments include the injection of autologous or heterologous materials, slicing of the superficial layer of the vocal mucosa and phonotherapy.…”
