Acute visceral cysticercosis by Taenia hydatigena in lambs and treatment with praziquantel

Abstract: An acute outbreak of Taenia hydatigena cysticercosis, causing mortality in 5 of 21 (23.8%) female lambs, is reported. Gross post-mortem examinations and histology showed Cysticercus tenuicollis as the cause of death. Biochemical parameters in infected lambs confirmed severe hepatitis. Praziquantel, given once at 15 mg/kg body weight (bw), was administered and a dramatic improvement in the clinical condition and biochemical parameters was observed up to 30 days following treatment.

“…The tapeworm T. hydatigena uses canids (primarily dogs) as definitive hosts. The metacestode larval stage of T. hydatigena infects mostly domestic animals such as goats, sheep and pigs, resulting in cysticercosis; an infection of veterinary importance that causes huge economic loses especially in livestock production as a result of mortality [1], condemnation of infected organs and carcasses, and the financial cost of diagnosis and inspection [25].…”

“…In high infections, mortality may occurs, as described by Scala et al (2016) in central Sardinia, Italy, where an acute outbreak of T. hydatigena cysticercosis occurred, causing mortality in 5 of 21 (23.8%) female lambs. In Greek slaughtered sheep, the infection level due to C. tenuicollis was 29.4% (CHRISTODOULOPOULOS et al, 2008).…”

“…For instance, the cestode Taenia krabbei might play a crucial role as intestinal parasite in European wolves 24 and is known to develop metacestodes in cardiac and skeletal muscles in intermediate hosts 24 25 . In contrast to T. krabbei , for which no human case of cysticercosis has been reported so far, other tapeworm species have a high zoonotic potential 26 and are responsible for several types of cysticercoses ( T. hydatigena ) 27 , coenuroses ( T. multiceps ) 28 , and echinococcoses ( E. multilocularis, E. granulosus ) 29 . In addition, nematodes and trematodes spread by carnivores are known to cause trichinellosis ( Trichinella spp.)…”
