Plants continue to be a major source of medicines, as they have been throughout human history. Ocillium basilicum has been used since ancient times as a medicine and food and it is known that the antioxidant effect of O. basilicum is beneficial to protect tissue and decreasing carcinogeniceffect of electromagnetic field (EMF), so it was hypothesized that this herb might also provide protection to ovarian tissue against reactive oxygen spaces (ROS). Female wistar rats (n = 40) were allocated to four groups, a control group (n = 10) and three treatment groups (n = 30). The first treatment group received O. basilicum extract (1.5 g/kg body weight), the second extract group received O. basilicum extract (1.5 g/kg body weight) and EMF exposure at 50 Hz for 40 consecutive days, whilst the third group received only EMF exposure for 40 consecutive days. At the conclusion of the test period, rat ovary tissues were removed from all group members. Ovary tissue preparation was performed and analyzed for apoptosis. There was a significant increase in apoptosis in EMF group when compared with other groups (P<0.05). EMF has negative effect on ovary histology in rats by increasing fibrosis and vein congestion. However, these side effects are less seen in the EMF group that received O. basilicum extract. Usage of O. basilicum extract could be one of the useful methods as antioxidant therapy against EMF exposure in industrial area.

End points of reproductive toxicity were investigated in male mice (Mus musculus, ICR) fed Nanjing City tap water for 90 days. There was no significant alteration in body weights between treatment and control mice. In treated mice, flow cytometry analysis of testicular tissue indicated that the relative percentage of the elongated spermatid (HC) decreased significantly (P < 0.05). Also slight increases in the relative percentage of round spermatids (1C) and primary spermatocytes (4C) were noted. The ratios of 4C:2C (diploid germ cells) and 1C:2C increased, and testicular histopathology indicated an expansion of interstitial space and a decreased number and size of Leydig cells in treated mice. The current study suggests that Nanjing City tap water is toxic to the reproductive system of mice and additional study to evaluate its effects on other species, including human beings, would be warranted.

To investigate the degradation of high concentration pollutant by Fe/Cu bimetallic system at a high operating temperature, 10,000 mg/L acid orange 7 (AO7) aqueous solution was treated by Fe/Cu bimetallic system at 80 o C. First, the effect of the operating temperature (30-80 o C) on the reactivity of Fe/Cu bimetallic particles was investigated thoroughly. Then, the studies on the effect of theoretical Cu mass loading, Fe/Cu dosage, stirring speed and initial pH on the reactivity of Fe/Cu bimetallic particles at a high temperature (i.e., 80 o C) were carried out, respectively. The degradation and transformation process of AO7 was studied by using COD, TOC and UV-Vis spectra. The results indicate that high concentration pollutant could be removed effectively by Fe/Cu bimetallic system at a high operating temperature. And the removal efficiencies of AO7 by Fe/Cu bimetallic system were in accordance with the pseudofirst-order model. Finally, it was observed that the high temperature could accelerate mass transport rate and overcome the high activation energy barrier to significantly improve the reactivity of Fe/Cu bimetallic particles. Therefore, the higher removal efficiency could be obtained by Fe/Cu system at a high operating temperature. Thus, the high operating temperature played a leading role in the degradation of high concentration pollutant.
