Acute phase response to recombinant interleukin‐6 and macrophage‐ and fibroblast‐derived crude cytokine preparations in primary cultures of mouse hepatocytes

Abstract: A number of acute phase proteins were determined by electroimmunoassay in media from CBA mouse hepatocytes cultured for 2 days with human recombinant IFN beta 2/IL-6, as well as with conditioned media from LPS-stimulated rat macrophages, and of murine L fibroblasts. It was found that human recombinant IL-6 caused three-fold increase in secretion of fibrinogen, while haptoglobin, complement C3 and transferrin were increased respectively, to 168 per cent, 151 per cent, and 145 per cent of the control. “…We show, that stimulation of brown adipocytes by physiological concentration of NE results in activated transcription and secretion of IL‐6 into the cultivation medium up to 10 ng/ml per 24 h. Similar IL‐6 concentration in serum were sufficient to activate most of the IL‐6 biological functions including synthesis of acute phase proteins by hepatocytes [19, 20]. The physiological relevance of IL‐6 release by BAT remains open.…”

“…An important role for IL-6 has been previously implicated in a variety of other cellular responses such as the mediation of the acute phase reaction in hepatocytes (49,50) and the modulation of immunologic responses dependent on lymphocytes (51) functions. This report represents the first demonstration that IL-6 may induce intercellular adherence molecules on mesenchymal cells and thereby influence neutrophil functions.…”
