Acute‐Phase Proteins, Oxidative Stress and Enzyme Activities of Blood Serum and Peritoneal Fluid in Cattle with Abomasal Displacement

Abstract: Background Blood serum and peritoneal fluid acute‐phase proteins, oxidative stress indicators, and some enzymes could be used for evaluation of abomasal tissue damage because of displacement in displaced abomasum (DA) cases. Objectives The aim of this study was to investigate the concentrations of acute‐phase proteins, oxidative stress indicators, and activities of enzymes in blood serum and peritoneal fluid in cattle with right displaced abomasum (RDA) and left displaced abomasum (LDA) and in healthy cows. An… Show more

“…Liver enzymes (ALT, AST, GGT), oxidative stress index-OSI and TOS increases are marked in animals with fascielosis, while TAS decreases in serum and plasma samples (15). In this study, the levels of TAS and TOS were increased in the peritoneal fluid compared with serum samples (Table 3) and some data supported our findings (14,16). On the other hand, the level of enzymes was increased at the beginning of treatment, particularly parenchymal enzymes, reported by Braun (17).…”

“…More recently, metabolites such as nonesterified fatty acids (NEFA) and BHB have been added to the profiles to monitor energy balance (6). There are acutephase responses, oxidative stress, and abomasal tissue damage in DA cases (7)(8)(9).…”

“…Many researchers have studied determinations of antioxidant status separately by detection of serum superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase, vitamin E and selenium levels or total antioxidant status in cattle with DA (15,19,22). It is noteworthy that Maden et al (18) recently published results similar to the ones presented in this manuscript on oxidative stress associated with displaced abomasum (i.e. higher oxidative stress in RDA than LDA by using a different biomarker to assess the oxidative stress=malondialdehyde).…”
