Acute phase proteins, interleukin 6, and heat shock protein 70 in broiler chickens administered with corticosterone

Abstract: An experiment was conducted to determine the effect of corticosterone (CORT) administration on serum ovotransferrin (OVT), α1-acid glycoprotein (AGP), ceruloplasmin (CPN), and IL-6 concentrations, and brain heat shock protein (HSP) 70 expression in broiler chickens. From 14 to 20 d of age, equal numbers of birds were subjected to either (i) daily intramuscular injection with CORT in ethanol:saline (1:1, vol/vol) at 6 mg/kg of BW, or (ii) daily intramuscular injection with 0.5 mL ethanol:saline (1:1, vol/vol; c… Show more

“…Their work has shown that overcrowding of birds in cages leads to increased serum concentrations of ovarian venous plasma (OVT), AGP, and ceramide (CER). Zulkifli et al [69] reported that the serum concentration of AGP was nearly 60 ng/ml following administration of corticosterone to birds to induce a stress response. In the present study, such high values were not observed in the chickens in the control group nor in the groups receiving the zinc glycine chelate on any of the three assay days, so we rule out the effect of stress on the concentration of the APPs.…”

“…described in details (Zulkifli et al 2014). The AGP concentration was determined using a commercial ELISA kit specific to chicken (Life Diagnostics Inc., West Chester, PA).…”

“…Heat shock proteins (HSPs) are molecular chaperones that help maintain regular cellular functions by playing a crucial role in protein folding, unfolding, aggregation, degradation and transport (Beissinger and Buchner 1998;Sørensen et al 2003;Arya et al 2007). HSPs increase in response to acute and chronic stress, injury, and disease (Santoro 2000;Al-Aqil et al 2013;Zulkifli et al 2014). In particular, HSP60, 70 and 90 have been shown to be indicators of stress in several avian species, including Barn Swallows (Hirundo rustica), Broiler Chickens, and House Finches (Haemorhous mexicanus) (Merino et al 2002;Beloor et al 2010;Hill et al 2013;Wein et al 2016).…”
