Acute‐phase proteins in gingival crevicular fluid during experimentally induced gingivitis

Abstract: The dynamics of four acute-phase proteins were investigated in gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) during the course of a 21 day experimental gingivitis study. These acute-phase proteins were the protease inhibitors alpha 2-macroglobulin (alpha 2-M) and alpha 1-antitrypsin (alpha 1-AT) and the iron-binding proteins transferrin (TF) and lactoferrin (LF). 6 healthy volunteers ceased all oral hygiene procedures for 3 weeks. GCF was sampled at seven day intervals from two sites per subject by paper strips for 30 s dur… Show more

“…Longer residence time could induce evaporation and therefore distort the achievement (Whitford et al 1981, Tözüm et al 2004). Thus, in the present study, SFFR values were evaluated after a retention period of 30 s (Weiger et al 1989, Adonogianaki et al 1994, Sekino et al 2005). Both SFFR and BOP were used to assess gingival inflammation.…”

“…The amount of albumin and lactoferrin in such eluates of GCF was assessed using a sandwich ELISA technique (Adonogianaki et al 1994): one plate for the analysis of albumin, and a second plate for the analysis of lactoferrin. The amount of the two different proteins was determined and expressed in ng/ml buffer.…”

“…Sterile Whatman grade 4 (Whatman Labsales Ltd, Maidstone, UK) paper strips (2 2 13 mm) were used to collect GCF [3] and the volume was determined by Periotron [34]. The individual crevicular site was gently air-dried in an apicocoronal direction and any visible supragingival plaque was removed.…”
