Acute Necrotizing Ulcerative Gingitivitis (ANUG) is a distinct and specific disease. This disease entity has been described as far back as the days of Hippocrates and is known by many synonyms. With the advent of antibiotics and with improved nutritional status, the incidence has decreased and even become extinct in developed countries. However, with the increasing incidence of severe immunodeficiency states such as seen in Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) the lesion has once more, become a well recognized and often encountered clinical entity in developed countries. In developing countries, however, the condition is still a commonly diagnosed clinical lesion because of the persistently poor nutritional status. Because of the current campaign for increased focus on global health issues, ANUG, a lesion of significant interest for the developing countries where malnutrition is high and for developing countries because of the AIDS, a global pandemic has resurfaced as a topic for discussions and study. This literature review will provide a better understanding of the epidemiology, etiology, and pathophysiology of ANUG associated with malnutrition.

Çocukların periodontal dokuları yetişkinlerden farklı olmasına rağmen, periodontal hastalıklar yetişkinlerde olduğu gibi çocuklarda da sık olarak görülmektedir. Yaygın olarak görülen periodontal hastalıklardan gingivitis periodontitise oranla çocuklarda daha sık görülmektedir. Çocuklukta başlangıç aşamasındaki periodontal hastalık gelecekte daha ileri periodontal hastalığın güçlü bir göstergesi olabilir. Bu nedenle, bu hastalıkların erken teşhis ve tedavisi önemlidir. Risk altındaki hastalar ve aileleri belirlenir ve özel tedavi programlarına alınırlarsa, toplumda periodontal hastalık prevalansı düşürülebilir.

Position Paper: Periodontal Diseases of Children and Adolescents

Children and adolescents are subject to several periodontal diseases. Although there is a much lower prevalence of destructive periodontal diseases in children than in adults, children can develop severe forms of periodontitis. In some cases, this destructive disease is a manifestation of a known underlying systemic disease. In other young patients, the underlying cause for increased susceptibility and early onset of disease is unknown. These diseases are often familial, suggesting a genetic predisposition for aggressive disease. Current modalities for managing periodontal diseases of children and adolescents may include antibiotic therapy in combination with non-surgical and/or surgical therapy. Since early diagnosis ensures the greatest chance for successful treatment, it is important that children receive a periodontal examination as part of their routine dental visits.
