Acute Myocardial Infarction among Hospitalizations for Heat Stroke in the United States

Abstract: Background: This study aimed to assess the risk factors and impact of acute myocardial infarction on in-hospital treatments, complications, outcomes, and resource utilization in hospitalized patients for heat stroke in the United States. Methods: Hospitalized patients with a principal diagnosis of heat stroke were identified in the National Inpatient Sample dataset from the years 2003 to 2014. Acute myocardial infarction was identified using the hospital International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision… Show more

“…During a heatstroke, the central vascular system is involved in whole-body heat dissipation response and organ perfusion. The body increases myocardial contractility, accelerates heart rate, and increases cardiac output to increase perspiration and heat dissipation [8][9][10]. In heatstroke, cardiac function is affected by the thermoregulatory center and nervous system.…”

“…The Deyo's modification of the Charlson Comorbidity Index was used to identify the burden of comorbid diseases (Table S1). 15 Demographic characteristics, hospital characteristics, acute organ failure, mechanical circulatory support, cardiac procedures, and noncardiac organ support use were identified for all admissions using previously used methodologies from our group 16‐47 . The four geographic regions included the Northeast, Midwest, South, and West as classified by the HCUP‐NIS 35 .…”

“…Patient characteristics, treatments, complications, and outcomes during hospitalization were identified using ICD-9 codes, as previously described ([ 14 ], Table S1). Patient characteristics included age, sex, race, smoking, alcohol drinking, obesity, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, hypothyroidism, chronic kidney disease, coronary artery disease, congestive heart failure, and atrial flutter/fibrillation.…”
