Acute Glomerulonephritis in an Immunocompetent Elderly Woman after Contact with a Child who Had Been Diagnosed as Erythema Infectiosum

Abstract: The prevalence of postinfectious glomerulonephritis has decreased in most developed countries. We report the case of a previously healthy, immunocompetent 65-year-old woman who developed acute glomerulonephritis associated with human parvovirus B19 infection. She was referred by her primary care physician for suspected congestive heart failure but she had an elevated creatinine level and an abnormal urinalysis. Renal biopsy showed diffuse endocapillary proliferative glomerulonephritis. After biopsy, we learned… Show more

“…It remains uncertain whether this abnormality was caused by PVB19 or SLE, or if it had another origin such as stress cardiomyopathy. PVB19-induced nephropathy is multifactorial [15,16] but is often post-infectious glomerulonephritis. Pathological findings in our patient were consistent with SLE glomerulonephritis.…”

“…Several different types of pathogens have been linked to PIGN, with bacteria such as streptococcus and staphylococcus being especially common instigators [ 1 ]. Various viruses such as human immunodeficiency virus, Epstein-Barr virus, hepatitis C virus, and human parvovirus B19 have also been implicated in PIGN [ 5 , 6 ]. PIGN may be especially common in tropical areas that are more advantageous for transmission [ 2 ].…”
