Acute dose of alcohol affects cognitive components of reaction time to an omitted stimulus: differences among sensory systems

Abstract: Cognitive functions are impaired by moderate increasing BACs that do not affect motor movement, and the tactile sensory system may be relatively insensitive to this impairment.

“…More commonly, it is proposed that alcohol disrupts a cognitively mediated system that, in turn, increases the likelihood of an aggressive response (Bushman 1997). The detrimental effects of alcohol on cognition are well described (Hernandez et al 2006;Koelega 1995;Maylor et al 1992;Nelson et al 1986;Rohrbaugh et al 1988)-in particular, alcohol's disruption of pre-frontal processes that control executive function have been implicated in mediating the alcohol-aggression relationship (Giancola 2000(Giancola , 2004 by inducing deficits in the encoding and appraisal of new information (Sayette 1993).…”

“…Participants waited for an additional 30 min to continue to allow for absorption of any active ingredients that might have been present in the drink. Thus, 45 min elapsed from the time of the initial drink consumption to the subsequent post-test assessment, a period in line with protocols from similar previous studies that involved alcohol (Hernández et al, 2006;Weissenborn and Duka, 2003) and caffeine (Jay et al, 2006). Experimenter #2 (the second author) then administered the RBANS post-test, which was doubleblinded and given in private at the opposite end of the building from where the drink administration took place.…”
