Acute Consumption of Bordo Grape Juice and Wine Improves Serum Antioxidant Status in Healthy Individuals and Inhibits Reactive Oxygen Species Production in Human Neuron-Like Cells

Abstract: Few studies investigated the biological effects of American grape cultivars. We investigated the metabolic response after acute consumption of grape juice or wine from Bordo grapes (Vitis labrusca) in a placebo-controlled crossover study with fifteen healthy volunteers. Blood samples were collected 1 hour after the intake of 100 mL of water, juice, or wine to measure TBARS, ABTS, FRAP, glucose, and uric acid levels. To evaluate differences in cellular response, intracellular reactive species production (DCFH-D… Show more

“…Therefore, the identification of natural compounds with moderate cytotoxic activity is important, due to their easy availability, their low cost, and their ability to act effectively in reducing the incidence of cancer, without adverse side effects (Serra et al, 2013). In this sense, fox grapes (Vitis labrusca) and their derivatives stand out, because of their several nutritional, pharmacological and therapeutic benefits, such as in the treatment of cardiovascular diseases (Quiñones et al, 2013;Huang et al, 2015), liver and kidney disorders (Ulusoy et al, 2012;Charradi et al, 2013;Kim et al, 2013), and anti-tumor activity (Zheng et al, 2012;Zhang et al, 2013;Nivelle et al, 2017), especially due to the presence of phenolic compounds and their antioxidant activity (Fernandes et al, 2013;Maestre et al, 2013;Toaldo et al, 2015;Copetti et al, 2018).…”

“…Considering the grape intake per capita and per year, the first 10 countries for the highest consumption (in kg/inhabitant) were: Albania (56.7), Turkmenistan (43.3), Macedonia Several bioactive properties of grapes are conserved in its juice, unless processed at extremely high temperatures (Copetti et al 2018). The beneficial effects of grape juice in humans are supported by numerous studies.…”

“…10 Members from the Department of Food Technology and Science at the Federal University of Santa Maria contribute to this idea by explaining that fruits and vegetables contain a type of compound called polyphenols. 11 A polyphenol can be defined as a natural antioxidant that can help to slow or stop the oxidative damage caused by ROS. 12 Discussion centered around these fruits has increased because of their antioxidant properties.…”
