“…Thus induction of intravascular platelet aggregation with platelet antiserum, ADP and collagen (Vaage, B0 & Hognestad, 1974), protamine chloride (Radegran & McAslan, 1972), air emboli (Khan, Alkalay, Suetsugu & Stein, 1972) and bacterial endotoxin (Stein & Thomas, 1967) affected lung mechanics in a similar manner to pulmonary microembolization. These effects could be prevented by prior induction of thrombocytopaenia (platelet counts less than 50000/,ul) with platelet antiserum (Khan et al 1972) or endotoxin (Stein & Thomas, 1967). Moreover, injection of autologous thromboemboli into dogs (Cade, 1975), barium sulphate into cats (B0 et al 1974) and glass beads into dogs (Mlczoch, Tucker, Weir, Reeves & Grover, 1978) produced significantly smaller increases in pulmonary arterial pressures in thrombocytopaenic animals than in normal animals.…”
