Acute and sub-chronic effects of copper on survival, respiratory metabolism, and metal accumulation in Cambaroides dauricus

Abstract: Trace metal contamination in the aquatic ecosystem occurs worldwide: although copper is an essential trace metal, it is considered as a pollutant at certain levels in China. Freshwater crayfish Cambaroides dauricus is a commercially important wild species in northeastern China, in which is an important heavy industry area. The population of C. dauricus was decreasing sharply due to the environmental pollution and human intervention over the past 20 years. However, nothing is known regarding the responses of th… Show more

“…A peroxisome is a type of organelle involved in fatty acid oxidation, amino acid and polyamine catabolism, and ROS reduction (Bonekamp et al, 2009). Peroxisome is a highly conserved cellular pathway that plays an important role in the selective degradation of cellular proteins, thereby helping regulate various vital cellular functions (Banfalvi, 2011). The enhanced proteasome activity is beneficial to reduce copper stress-induced protein ubiquitination and carbonylation (Romero-Puertas et al, 2004), which is advantageous for GXDK6 to survive under high-copper concentrations.…”

“…Copper is an essential trace element for living cells ( Bao et al, 2020 ). Adults need to consume 1.2 mg copper daily for life activities ( de Luna et al, 2020 ), and insufficient copper intake may cause anemia, gastrointestinal discomfort, and eye diseases ( Zhang et al, 2019 ).…”

“…The publication bias was examined by Egger's test (Egger et al, 1997) were used as the limits of grouping, which could ensure that each group included 8 or more effect sizes. Regarding the exposure duration, a total of 9 different exposure periods were included, which could be divided into three groups (each group involving 9 or more effect sizes), including groups of acute exposure (1, 3 and 4 days), sub-acute exposure (5, 7 and 10 days) and sub-chronic (14, 15 and 26 days) exposure (Bao et al, 2020). In terms of the particle size, the data could be divided into two groups (each group included more than 10 effect sizes), and the grouping limit was set at 1 μm that was also the size limit between nanoplastics (NPs) and large MPs (LMPs) (Gigault et al, 2018).…”
