The objective of this work was to evaluate combinations between acid digestion techniques and spectrophotometric quantification to measure chromium concentration in cattle feces. Digestion techniques were evaluated based on the use of nitric and perchloric acids, sulfuric and perchloric acids, and phosphoric acid. The chromium quantification in the solutions was performed by colorimetry and by atomic absorption spectrophotometry (AAS). When AAS was used, the addition of calcium chloride to the solutions as a releasing agent was also evaluated. Several standard samples containing known chromium contents were produced (0, 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10g of chromium per kg of feces) using cattle feces obtained from three different animals to evaluate the accuracy of the different combinations of techniques. The accuracy was evaluated by adjusting a simple linear regression model of the estimated values on the actual values of chromium content in the standard samples. Regardless of the digestion technique, the chromium content estimates in the standard samples obtained by colorimetry were not accurate (P<0.05). Considering the AAS quantification, the digestion techniques based on nitric and perchloric acids and based on sulfuric and perchloric acids provided complete chromium recovery (P>0.05). The use of the digestion technique in phosphoric acid provided incomplete recovery of the fecal chromium (P<0.05). Subsequently, the digestion techniques in nitric and perchloric acids and digestion in sulfuric and perchloric acids, both evaluated by AAS, were compared using 84 cattle feces samples. SUMMARY This experiment evaluated the correlation between the estimates of fecal digestibility and dry matter digestibility (DMD) and nutrients obtained using internal (indigestibles dry materiDM, neutral detergent fiber-iNDF, acid detergent fiber-iADF and acid detergent ligniniADL) and external (chromium oxide-Cr2O3, titanium dioxide-TiO2, and purified and enriched lignin from eucalyptus-LIPE®) markers and the values obtained by the total feces collection method. Twenty uncastrated male sheep, with 29.64±5.53 kg average live weight; approximately 12 months old, were kept in metabolic cages and fed diets containing untreated sugarcane-top hay or sugarcane-top hay hydrolyzed with 3 and 6% urea or 1.5 and 3% calcium oxide (CaO). There was a positive correlation (P<.05) between the fecal production estimated by the markers and via total feces collection, with coefficients higher than 90% for iDM, Cr2O3, and TiO2. The DMD and nutrients estimated with the use of markers was positively correlated (P<.05) with that obtained by total feces collection. Coefficients of correlation for digestibility obtained by total collection were higher than those obtained with Cr2O3, but close to those obtained using TiO2. The coefficient of correlation between the digestibility of protein and fiber fraction estimated with iDM and iNDF and that obtained by total collection was higher than 70%. Internal marker iDM and external markers Cr2O3 and TiO2 are effective in estimating fecal production and DMD and nutrients.

Acurácia, precisão e robustez de indicadores internos para predição da digestibilidade aparente total de matéria seca em equinos [Accuracy, precision and RESUMOObjetivou-se com este trabalho avaliar a acurácia, a precisão e a robustez de diferentes indicadores internos na predição da digestibilidade aparente total da matéria seca (MS) para equinos. Foram utilizadas cinco éguas em manutenção, sem raça definida, com peso médio de 406±76,9kg e idade aproximada de 3,5 anos, alojadas em baias individuais. O experimento foi disposto em quadrado latino 5x5 (cinco dietas e cinco animais).
