Acupuncture for patients with mild hypertension: study protocol of an open-label multicenter randomized controlled trial

Abstract: BackgroundSeveral studies using acupuncture to treat essential hypertension have been carried out. However, whether acupuncture is efficacious for hypertension is still controversial. Therefore, this trial aims to evaluate the efficacy and safety of acupuncture for patients with mild hypertension.Methods/DesignThis is a large scale, open-label, multicenter, randomized controlled clinical trial with four parallel arms. We will recruit 428 hypertensive patients with systolic blood pressure (SBP) between 140 and … Show more

“…Acupuncture treatment, as one of the complementary therapeutic modalities in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), has been frequently used to treat various human diseases including chronic pain [ 17 ], hypertension [ 18 ], Parkinson's disease [ 19 ], functional dyspepsia [ 20 ], and seasonal allergic rhinitis [ 21 ], and the practical outcomes of acupuncture have been demonstrated by quite a few of randomized controlled clinical trials [ 22 – 24 ]. In acupuncture-related theory, human body is covered by meridian network which is composed of 14 principal meridians and hundreds of acupoints.…”

“…A recently published trial by Li et al 7 , which was not included in this SR, did use an ABPM device; the trial showed a significant BP reduction in the acupuncture group. Li et al 8 reported a protocol for acupuncture to treat mild hypertension; they also used an ABPM device, because ABPM is better than clinical BP measurement in predicting cardiovascular events. Specifically, in a 5-year follow-up study, ABPM predicted cardiovascular risk even after adjustment for the clinical BP measurement.…”
