Acupuncture for chronic pain and depression in primary care: a programme of research

Abstract: BackgroundThere has been an increase in the utilisation of acupuncture in recent years, yet the evidence base is insufficiently well established to be certain about its clinical effectiveness and cost-effectiveness. Addressing the questions related to the evidence base will reduce uncertainty and help policy- and decision-makers with regard to whether or not wider access is appropriate and provides value for money.AimOur aim was to establish the most reliable evidence on the clinical effectiveness and cost-eff… Show more

“…5 Living with chronic pain is associated with impairment of physical and psychological functioning, [13][14][15] lost productivity, 16 and lower socioeconomic status. 6 Acupuncture therapy is effective in the treatment of chronic pain conditions [17][18][19][20] including chronic low back pain, [21][22][23][24] neck pain, [24][25][26] and knee pain from osteoarthritis. [27][28][29][30][31][32] A recently updated individual patient data meta-analyses including over 20,000 patients with chronic pain showed acupuncture to be significantly better than sham treatment or usual care with only a 15% reduction in treatment effect at 1 year.…”

“…Once validated, future TCM investigations would be able to use the TCMDD and thereby might include verification of the participating practitioners' diagnostic reliability. High-quality research using meta-analysis of large numbers of subjects drawn from randomized control trials has recently been published 23,24 that confirm that acupuncture is very effective in chronic pain and depression. Furthermore, the Acupuncture Evidence Project 25 also reports strong evidence for effective treatment of 8 conditions and moderate evidence for a further 38 conditions.…”
