Activity-Related Energy Expenditure in Older Adults

Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to 1) provide an overview of the science of physical activity-related energy expenditure in older adults (65+ years); 2) offer suggestions for future research and guidelines for how scientists should be reporting their results in this area; and 3) present strategies for making this data more accessible to the lay person. This paper is meant to serve as a preliminary blueprint for future empirical work in the area of energy expenditure in older adults as well as translational effort… Show more

“…Cette démarche nécessite une chasse aux interdits qui sont trop souvent ancrés dans l'imaginaire notamment des familles qui pensent oeuvrer pour le bien de leurs parents. Un apport énergétique et protéique suffisant doit permettre de limiter les risques de sarcopénie car les besoins énergétiques diminuent très peu chez les sujets âgés [31]. Les restrictions alimentaires excessives nécessitent d'être proscrites et la ration calorique ne doit pas être inférieure à 1500 calories par jour.…”

“…For advancing the field of energy expenditure measurement in older adults, a number of recommendations have been suggested, but little research has been done. 32 Most of these recommendations will be addressed in this thesis research, including aspects such as: 1) include sufficient number of older adults, 2) evaluate potential age-related differences in metabolic costs under standard conditions, 3) compare energy expenditure data (e.g. RMR, METs, VO 2 ) across groups (demographic, biometric, health status), 4) harmonise measures, 5) measure activities that are common among older adults, 6) examine free-living activities, and 7) estimate oxygen consumption, in order to estimate the relative intensity of common activities in older adults.…”

In this thesis, some of these challenges, including those related to cut-points, predictive equations for assessing EE, the validity and reliability of selected self-report and objective measures and measurement of EE in daily activities, will be examined.…”
