Activity-Directed Fractionation ofPleurotus ostreatus. in the Search for Analgesics

Abstract: Pleurotus ostreatus (Jacquin: Fries) P. Kummer (Tricholomataceae) was subjected to an antinociceptive activityguided fractionation procedure in order to identify the fraction having highest activity. Three extracts, namely, acetone, dichloromethane, and hexane, were prepared at room temperature using fresh P. ostreatus, and 500 mg/kg was orally administered to male rats. The acetone extract showed significant antinociceptive activity with the hot-plate assay (male, 68%; p < 0.05), whereas dichloromethane and h… Show more

“…Its extract can lower cholesterol as effectively as dietary supplements (Khatun et al, 2007). Furthermore, P. ostreatus has potent antinociceptive, antitumor, antioxidant, and immunological activities (Jayakumar et al, 2009, Vasudewa et al, 2008, Sarangi et al, 2006). P. ostreatus has been cultivated using agroindustrial residues from banana (Reddy et al, 2003), olive (Ruiz-Rodriguez et al, 2010, Kalmis et al, 2008), and weed plants ( Khatun et al, 2007), as well as crop waste, including soybean, cotton, and wheat stalk and sugar cane remnants (Khatun et al, 2007).…”

“…Planas et al [42] evaluated the opioid receptor-mediated activities on suppression of the inflammation in the carrageenan-induced paw oedema. e SFDP P.o and AE of P.o have been shown to act via opioid mechanisms in inducing antinociception action in rats [9,43]. erefore, P.o may also act via opioid receptors to induce anti-inflammatory activity.…”

“…Extraction and fractionation of P. cystidiosus mushroom was carried out using the procedure of Vasudewa et al (2008). This procedure was very successful, giving a fraction with potent anti nociceptive activity.…”
