Activity and Stability Studies of Verbascoside, a Novel Antioxidant, in Dermo-Cosmetic and Pharmaceutical Topical Formulations

Abstract: We here report the results of our investigations carried out on verbascoside, a phenylpropanoid glycoside known for its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and photoprotective actions. Verbascoside was obtained from Buddleia davidii meristematic cells, obtained in turn using a sustainable biotechnology platform which employs an in vitro plant cell culture technology. Verbascoside was first investigated to assess the behaviour of the active ingredient in solution or in finished preparations, in view of its potential… Show more

“…IGs were stable in controls during the incubation period (no significant degradation detected, p>0.05), but acteoside showed an exponential decay curve, 31.5 % of the initial concentration remained by the 15th day. The compound is considered somewhat unstable in solution, as described by (Vertuani et al, 2011). .…”

“…This phenylpropanoid glycoside has numerous therapeutic effects; its antioxidant [31,36,37], kinase C inhibitor [38], immunomodulatory [39,40], hepatoprotective [41], anti-inflammatory [42][43][44], analgesic [45], and anti-asthmatic [46] actions have already been validated. Verbascoside has also been indicated to treat patients with the Parkinson disease, an oxidative stress-induced neurodegenerative condition [47].…”

“…Innovative herbal medicines containing verbascoside may become a reality, especially if we consider that this substance remains stable in pharmaceutical formulations and dermocosmetics [31]. Besides P. venusta, there have been reports that the dry biomass of roseroot species yields approximately 16% of this biologically active component [32].…”

“…As a defense system against the action of free radicals in this optical window, topical antioxidants incorporated in cosmetic formulations [18,19,20], and the systemic [21,22,23] and combined application of antioxidants [21,24,25], are advised. Additionally, antioxidants protect cosmetic formulations [26,27] against oxidation, thus extending their lifetime.…”
