Active vibration control of flexural-shear type frame structures with smart structures using piezoelectric actuators

Abstract: To apply smart structures to buildings, a new vibration control strategy is proposed for flexural-shear type frame structures with smart structures using piezoelectric actuators. Actuators are incorporated in columns, and the response of the entire structure is reduced by control of the bending moment and axial force of the columns. Combined application of these two controls is performed by arrangement of actuators. Two control strategies were tested: one involves the use of a model matching method and the oth… Show more

“…In the case of applicability of the proposed method in realistic structures, using of the piezoelectric stack could be useful for a lot of reasons. In this way the method which has been introduced by Kamada et al [7] is proposed. In this method piezoelectric stack actuators are placed at the bottom of firststory columns in both sides.…”

“…This paper 2 Advances in Civil Engineering simplifies the selected modes into a unitary form by a simple method, so that the suitable position of the piezoelectric elements is achieved. Moreover Kamada and his coworkers modeled a four-story building, which was controlled by piezoelectric actuators, utilizing different algorithms [7]. Such study shows that floor accelerations could be reduced up to seventy percent.…”

“…Experimental investigation on building structures has been done by Kamada et al (1997Kamada et al ( , 1998 and Aizawa et al (1998). Kamada et al (1997) demonstrated the use of 32 piezoelectric stack actuators for response control of a four-story structural frame by inserting the actuators into the bottom of a column.…”

“…For example, Nkikkhoo presented the numerical analysis of active vibration control of piezoelectric smart beams and slabs [8,9]. Kamada et al carried out the active vibration control tests on frame structures [10,11]. However, little research has been done on the investigations of the active deflection control of concrete beam using piezoelectric actuator.…”
