Loop Shaping Control of a Model-Story Building Using Smart Materials

Abstract: This research concerns active vibration control of a two-story model structural frame by using the method of loop shaping. Piezoceramic smart materials, in particular the PZT (Lead Zirconate Titanate) in the form of patches, are surface-bonded on the structure and function as actuators and sensors. Sensitivity charts are introduced to assist the control system design. A nonparametric system identification is performed to obtain the frequency response function of the model building. A loop-shaped controller is … Show more

“…Piezoelectric ceramics have played an important role in actuator and sensor applications due to their excellent electromechanical coupling properties and extremely fast response and have been widely studied by many researchers (Huang et al, 2011;Lim et al, 2001;Lim and Lau, 2005;Sethi et al, 2008;Tzou and Chou, 2001;Uchino, 1998;Yang et al, 2004;Yang and Xiang, 2007). In addition, piezoelectric ceramics, as embedded transducers, have been successfully applied to structural health monitoring of concrete in Song et al (2006Song et al ( , 2007 and Li et al (2010).…”

“…The AVC method was also found in civil infrastructures in which the review has been made by considering different types of application of civil structures that have been controlling piezoelectric material [45]. For the case of suspension bridges, an investigation has been made for the active damping controlled by decentralized integral force feedback [46] and, similarly, model frame structures, [47] including smart model frames [48] and loop share buildings [49], are also controlled.…”

“…In the first study [155], the active control of first three modes were accomplished with a LQR controller, whereas the second study [156] used the pole placement controller for the same purpose. The article by Sethi et al [157], that followed the two mentioned studies [155,156], repeated the same ideas on a two floor structure, only this time the AVC problem was analyzed with the sensitivity charts. In control of cable vibrations, Gattulli et al [158] presented the study of the noncollocated actuator/sensor arrangement, which dealt with the nonlinear oscillations of the cable with an enhanced direct output feedback control.…”
