BackgroundQ fever, a worldwide zoonotic disease caused by Coxiella burnetii, is endemic in northern Spain where it has been reported as responsible for large series of human pneumonia cases and domestic ruminants' reproductive disorders. To investigate pathogen exposure among domestic ruminants in semi-extensive grazing systems in northern Spain, a serosurvey was carried out in 1,379 sheep (42 flocks), 626 beef cattle (46 herds) and 115 goats (11 herds). Serum antibodies were analysed by ELISA and positive samples were retested by Complement Fixation test (CFT) to detect recent infections.ResultsELISA anti-C. burnetii antibody prevalence was slightly higher in sheep (11.8 ± 2.0%) than in goats (8.7 ± 5.9%) and beef cattle (6.7 ± 2.0%). Herd prevalence was 74% for ovine, 45% for goat and 43% for bovine. Twenty-one percent of sheep flocks, 27% of goat and 14% of cattle herds had a C. burnetii seroprevalence ≥ 20%. Only 15 out of 214 ELISA-positive animals reacted positive by CFT. Age-associated seroprevalence differed between ruminant species with a general increasing pattern with age. No evidence of correlation between abortion history and seroprevalence rates was observed despite the known abortifacient nature of C. burnetii in domestic ruminants.ConclusionsResults reported herein showed that sheep had the highest contact rate with C. burnetii in the region but also that cattle and goats should not be neglected as part of the domestic cycle of C. burnetii. This work reports basic epidemiologic patterns of C. burnetii in semi-extensive grazed domestic ruminants which, together with the relevant role of C. burnetii as a zoonotic and abortifacient agent, makes these results to concern both Public and Animal Health Authorities.

OBJECTIVE Investigate the seroprevalence of the causative agent of Q fever, Coxiella burnetii in domestic dogs in the Townsville region, North Queensland, Australia. METHOD Blood samples were collected from dogs attending veterinary clinics for routine procedures. RESULTS An overall seropositivity of 21.8% (95% confidence interval (CI) 21.6-22.1%) was observed. A retrospective study of samples collected in the same region during 1984-85 was also performed, with an overall seropositivity of 16.0% (95% CI 15.9-16.2). CONCLUSION Evidence of C. burnetii infection in domestic dogs may have public health implications for dog owners, as well as veterinarians because of occupational exposure. This study is the first known investigation of C. burnetii seroprevalence in dogs in Queensland.

Amaç. Bu çalışmanın amacı, Akdeniz iklimi etkisi altında olan Kuzey Kıbrıs'ta ortaya çıkan ateşli hastalıklar ve hastaların yakınmaları arasındaki ilişkinin araştırılmasıdır. Üniversite hastanesi acil servisine ateş nedeni ile başvuran hastaların başvuru yakınmaları ve etiyolojilerinin epidemiyolojik açıdan değerlendirilmesidir. Yöntem. Retrospektif olarak Temmuz 2010 ile Temmuz 2012 tarihleri arasında Kuzey Kıbrıs Türk Cumhuriyetindeki (KKTC) Tıp Fakültesi Hastanesi acil servisine başvuran hastaların başvuru nedenleri incelenmiş ve ateş yakınması olanlar çalışmaya alınmıştır. Bulgular. Acil servise başvuran 15.820 hastanın 1.224'ünde (%7,7) ateş yakınması olduğu tespit edilmiştir. Ateşin en sık nedeni olarak ortaya konulan hastalık grubu üst solunum yolu enfeksiyonları olarak saptanmıştır. Diğer en sık görülen nedenler ise sıklık sırasına göre alt solunum yolu enfeksiyonları ve gastroenteritler olarak değerlendirilmiştir. Sonuçlar. KKTC'de bir üniversite hastanesine en sık ateş nedeni ile başvuran hasta grubu viral üst solunum yolu enfeksiyonları olarak bulundu. Bu veriler diğer ülkelerdeki hastanelerde acil servis başvuru nedenleri incelendiğinde benzer özellikler gösterdiği tespit edilmiştir.Anahtar sözcükler: Ateş, acil servis, enfeksiyon, etiyoloji, Kıbrıs Abstract Aim. The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between emerging diseases with fever and the complaints of patients admitted to the hospital emergency department in North Cyprus. It is aimed to evaluate the admission complaints and etiology, who are admitted to the university hospital emergency department due to fever, from epidemiological point of view. Methods. In this retrospective study, the patients who applied to the emergency department of Medical Faculty Hospital, North Cyprus with complaints of fever between July 2010 and July 2012 were evaluated. Results. In 15,820 patients who admitted to the emergency department, 1,224 (%7.73) were found to be suffering from fever. The most common group of disease cause of fever was upper respiratory tract infections. Evaluation of other most common diseases in order to frequency were lower respiratory tract infections and gastroenteritis. Conclusions. The most common cause of fever were found to be the group of patients with a viral upper respiratory tract infections in North Cyprus. It has been identified that these data are similar to the other countries hospital emergency services.
