“…The seroprevalence found in sheep was comparable to that reported in other Spanish regions where seroprevalence ranged between 1.7% and 18.8% [ 5 ] or in some Mediterranean regions, with values between 9% and 25% [ 19 , 22 , 24 , 37 , 38 ]. These data highlight the risk of C. burnetii zoonosis associated to sheep in all the Mediterranean countries.…”

“…Serological surveys have been carried out in many countries to evaluate the distribution of C. burnetii in domestic ruminants. In some areas bovine seems to be the main reservoir [ 15 - 17 ] whereas in others, goats [ 18 , 19 ] or sheep [ 20 - 22 ] are the main domestic reservoir. However in other studies, serological surveys indicate that the different domestic ruminant species can play together a relevant role in the domestic cycle of C. burnetii [ 3 , 23 - 25 ].…”

“…Although there have been seroprevalence studies on animals with C. burnetii in other countries, 6 there are no published papers on the seroprevalence of C. burnetii in domestic animals in Australia. The dog population for the area was estimated by determining the number of residential properties and multiplying this by the percentage of households with dogs (40%), multiplied by the average number of dogs per household (1.54).…”

Although there have been seroprevalence studies on animals with C. burnetii in other countries, 6 there are no published papers on the seroprevalence of C. burnetii in domestic animals in Australia. Thus, the use of an expected prevalence of 5% in this study was considered conservative.…”
