Active Reflectors: Possible Solutions Based on Reflectarrays and Fresnel Reflectors

Abstract: An overview about some of the recent Spanish developments on active reflectors is presented. In the first part, a novel beamsteering active reflectarray is deeply studied. It is based on implementing in each elementary radiator an IQ modulator structure, in which amplitude and phase control of the scattered field is achieved. Finally, a special effort is made in offering solutions to overcome the active antenna integration problems. In the second part, the active concept is firstly extended to Fresnel reflecto… Show more

“…Though this area is still growing, there have been several cross-polarized designs employing two-port phaseshifters in cascade with amplifiers connecting the two polarization ports of patch antennas. Experimental results employing phase shifters based on IQ modulators [87] and reflectionmode phase shifters [84] have been recently presented. Active array lens designs have also been proposed [88], though presently beam-forming is achieved by employing multiple feeds.…”

“…With respect to a PCR, an AR is smaller and lighter, but its reliability is often reduced by the need of a power source, usually a battery buffered by solar panels, and its phase stability demands careful design. Innovative concepts are currently under investigation based on the use of reflect arrays [ 23 ], but to the authors’ knowledge, until today, no operative applications to spaceborne radar interferometry have been proposed.…”

“…along z (assuming the source is at a fixed location). This displacement h can be electromechanically adjusted for realtime control over a range of [0, λ/2] to achieve full phase coverage of [0, 2π], considering the round-trip reflection path of the incident wave [6]. By adjusting the elevation h in small increments, any value of reflection phase may be achieved.…”
