Action ofCoriandrum sativumL. Essential Oil upon OralCandida albicansBiofilm Formation

Abstract: The efficacy of extracts and essential oils from Allium tuberosum, Coriandrum sativum, Cymbopogon martini, Cymbopogon winterianus, and Santolina chamaecyparissus was evaluated against Candida spp. isolates from the oral cavity of patients with periodontal disease. The most active oil was fractionated and tested against C. albicans biofilm formation. The oils were obtained by water-distillation and the extracts were prepared with macerated dried plant material. The Minimal Inhibitory Concentration—MIC was deter… Show more

“…A. zerumbet, from the Zingiberaceae family, exhibits antioxidant (ELZAAWELY et al, 2007), antibacterial and antifungal activities (VICTÓRIO et al, 2009). C. sativum, belonging to the Umbelliferae family, has antifungal activity (FURLETTI et al, 2011), nematicidal activity against the phytonematode Bursaphelenchus xylophilus (KIM et al, 2008), and anthelmintic activity on gastrointestinal nematodes (EGUALE et al, 2007).…”

“…Plant materials such as extracts, essential oils and isolated compounds have been demonstrated to inhibit the growth of bacteria (Erturk, 2006), yeast (Duarte et al, 2005) and filamentous fungi (Fukai et al, 2003) (Furletti, 2011). H. littoralis is a well-known plant for its isolated alkaloids and flavonoid compounds.…”

“…Coriandrum sativum essential oil possessed antifungal activity against Candida species isolates from the oral cavity of patients with periodontal disease. 2-hexen-1-ol, 3-hexen-1-ol and cyclodecane were determined as the active constituents in the oil [100]. The efficacy and tolerability of 6% coriander oil was tested in unguentum leniens in the treatment of interdigital tinea pedis.…”
