Acrylates as a significant causes of allergic contact dermatitis – new sources of exposure

Abstract: Acrylate monomers have a wide range of applications. Since the 1950s, many reports of occupational origin allergic contact dermatitis due to (meth)acrylate monomers have been published. During last decades, (meth)acrylate allergy has undergone an occupational shift from dentistry toward beauty industry and medical devices. The aim of the study was to conduct a literature review on acrylates as a cause of allergic contact dermatitis, current sources of exposure as well as identification of professional groups w… Show more

“…Allergic contact dermatitis is another potential risk of using a hair prosthesis. Acrylates, a compound found in glue adhesives, has been attributed to allergic contact dermatitis 15 . Patients presenting with sudden eruption of a rash restricted to areas of glue adhesive application should raise concern for allergic contact dermatitis.…”

“…Much literature has emphasized side effects and immunogenic responses with synthetic polymers. Acrylates are used in baby diapers, and prostheses [ 156 ], but acrylates may lead to serious allergic responses and dermatitis [ 157 ]. Similar kinds of side effects have also been observed with other synthetic polymers and adhesives, including anaphylaxis allergic reaction and arachnoid plasty in the case of fibrin glue [ 158 , 159 ], volitional swallowing, gastrointestinal obstruction, asthma, and allergy with polyethylene terephthalate [ 160 ] and oxidative stress from polypropylene used in mesh surgery [ 161 ].…”

“…3 Acrylates are plastic products formed by polymerization of acrylic or methacrylic acid. 4 Artificial sculptured nails are created by mixing powdered polymethyl methacrylate polymers and liquid ethyl or isobutyl methacrylate monomers and then applying this mixture to the nail plate. 5 Gel and powder nails employ a mixture that is similar to acrylic powders, which require UV or LED radiation to polymerize and harden on the nail plate.…”
