Acridine and Its Derivatives: Synthesis, Biological, and Anticorrosion Properties

Abstract: The phenomenon of corrosion threatens metallic components, human safety, and the economy. Despite being eco-friendly and promising as a corrosion inhibitor, acridine has not been explored to its full potential. In this review, we have discussed multiple biological activities that acridines have been found to show in a bid to prove that they are environmentally benign and much less toxic than many inhibitors. Some synthetic routes to acridines and substituted acridines have also been discussed. Thereafter, a mu… Show more

“…Whereas the intermolecular hydrogen bonding interaction N2 H2ÁÁÁO3A parameters are N2 H2: 0.86(2) Å, H2ÁÁÁO3A: 2.01(2) Å and the corresponding angle is 160 (19) . The C23 H23ÁÁÁCl1 type of weak hydrogen bonding interactions also found and the parameters are C23 H23: 0.92(2) Å, H23ÁÁÁCl1: 2.80(2) Å and the corresponding angle is 127 (16) . Apart from these interactions, the molecule also forms C HÁÁÁπ interactions in the unit cell.…”

“…15 A multitude of acridines and substituted acridines as corrosion inhibitors of different metals and alloys in various corrosive media have been studied. 16 Recently, acridinium compounds are used as photocatalysts for organic synthesis. 17 Several examples have been reported for synthesizing hexahydroacridine through a one-pot three-component reaction involving different aldehydes, various 1,3-diketones, and amines under suitable conditions.…”

“…Acridines, benzo-fused quinolines, have garnered huge interest from synthetic chemists due to their ability to intercalate between base pairs of double-stranded DNA and thus adapt the cellular machinery [163,164] and also because of their noteworthy biological activities such as their antitumor, antimalarial, antituberculosis, antibacterial, antiprotozoal, antileukemic, anticancer [165,166] As shown in Scheme 81, acridine derivatives 257 constructed through the intramolecular cyclization reaction of Morita-Baylis-Hillman acetates of 2-chloro-quinoline-3-carbaldehydes 255 with various active methylene compounds 256. [167] The structure of 258, a high bioactive compound for treatment of cancer, is similar to this synthesis approach (Scheme 81).…”

“…From this type of compounds, the following have been the most studied: carbohydrates, polysaccharides, polysulfide, phosphate esters, polycarboxylates/polycarboxylic acids, polyanilines, polyaspartates and other polyaminoacids, and polyvinylamide and polyamine derivatives [ 2 ]. Their inhibiting behavior is structurally reinforced by the presence of cyclic rings, double and triple bonds and heteroatoms such as oxygen and nitrogen that work as adsorption active centers [ 12 ]. It has been reported that the protection against corrosion by polymeric CIs has been above 90% in acid, sour and sweet media [ 13 ].…”
