Acral myxoinflammatory fibroblastic sarcoma

Abstract: Acral myxoinflammatory fibroblastic sarcoma is a rare low-grade malignant soft tissue tumor, usually observed in the extremities of middle-aged patients. We report a case involving the third finger of the left hand of a middle-aged man. The tumor showed a nodular architecture, with cellular areas, occasional foci of hyalinized fibrosis, and hypocellular areas with a myxoid background. Various neoplastic cells were identified including spindled or rounded epithelioid cells and occasional bizarre giant cells, mo… Show more

“…Regarding tumour location, initial reports overemphasised the predilection for distal extremities, so the term acral myxoinflammatory fibroblastic sarcoma was coined [2]. Although the adjective acral was deleted from the official nomenclature in 2002 because some cases are located axially [3], its use is still common [19,20,26,28,29,32,34,36,39,45]. Our analysis confirms that distal extremities are involved in the majority of cases, with hands and fingers being the most common sites.…”

“…Digital myxoid pseudocyst and distal digital subungual keratoacanthoma may also mimic the clinical picture of SAFM but with distinct histopathology. The cutaneous and histopathologic features of these diseases are summarized in a table (Table 1) [2,5,[7][8][9].…”

[5] Clinically it develops in patients of all ages and presents as a mass in the distal extremities, most frequently in the fingers and usually within the subcutaneous tissue. [6] It is now known that this tumor can occur more proximally and the term ′acral′ has been dropped in 2002 WHO classification.…”
